Showed up at Vallejo H/D at opening armed with 2 dozen donuts(bribery for tool use and generally being a nuisance)Finally got all the fit this and measure that, grind to fit cuz it's not stock crappola all done and I was making major inroads on engine assembly.Got ring end gap set, rings on pistons, pistons in cylinders and cylinders on lower end.Gee,I wonder why that piston looks to be sticking up so high. After frantic measuring and conferring, come to find S&S had sent wrong rods--3/16" longer!!!!Can you say schittttt!!!!!!I was gonna shoot myself.Had to dissassemble the ENTIRE FRIKKIN engine to get crank assembly out to put in correct rods coming friday.FARK<FARK<FARK!!!!!!!!Damn, but september is gonna be busy. |

Look on the bright side mate it should be a piece of next time, you are experinced now and will know just what to do. |

They did that to us recently, too, gave us 7.113's instead of 6.926's. I'm getting pistons with the pins raised. Longer rods work better anyway. Be sure to rebalance for the shorter rods. |

Bonnie Speedweek started Sat, 14 Aug. Tom Metty from our old Sportster team qualified with his twin Engined bike, "The Bad" in Unlimited A- PG with a very first run of 168 MPH! I'm sure their is more their, but it qaulifies on this open class...It ran a backup today of only 82 MPH...must of had big probs! A record of 125.078 MPH. He had a turn out with the 2000cc bike..only run it made. I think Death Wish is Mettys bike also in 3000 cc class...it ran a 147.195 on an open record in 3000cc A/PF, but for some reason it doesn't show up in the Record runs?? Their is a HD, that ran 227.00 MPH! in APS-PBF class on an open record class...the bike is in 1650 class. This is from Landracing.com" John Minnono turned heads with his new red Harley Davidson 1650 CC push rod class motorcycle. He went 227 mph in the first mile. This was the bike's first run on the salt."" end quote! He backed it up today with a 223 for a record of 225.819. Here's the bike, great looking bodywork! It will be on the long course from now on! http://www.scta-bni.org/Bonneville/Speedweek% 2004/photos_13_3/IM007241.JPG Some one with an HD qualified in 1350 P-PP class..man I'm rooting for them! A fella named Davey Camlin with an exit speed of 153.872. \He backed it up today with a 149.246, just missing the record of 152.338! he got real close! I hope he succeeds Aaron! The salt is nice & hard by all the reports & FAST! Here's a 750cc HD that qualified in its class: http://www.scta-bni.org/Bonneville/Speedweek% 2004/photos_14_3/IM007408.JPG A cool looking Big twin? http://www.scta-bni.org/Bonneville/Speedweek% 2004/photos_13_6/IM007338.JPG A Sportster here, I haven't seen where it has made a run yet & in what class?: An Ironhead in 750 class...NOTE the F&S HD Sticker! http://www.scta-bni.org/Bonneville/Speedweek% 2004/photos_13_3/IM007242.JPG The course was shut down a few times today, once from an accident in the pits, the other from a vehicle hitting one of the mile markers. Another excerpt from Landracing.com: "Interesting bike showed up from Bob Morlan, which could be the largest open-wheeled bike ever on the salt with 5,000 CCs. It is based on two Tribute motors." By the way Jim..bummer on the rods...a lot of work again to fix that right. Good luck guys with your LSR endeavors...I'll most likely sit this year out other than maybe a small wee chance of getting away from work to come just hang out. It would be nice to fly out versus driving all the way there for once, if I could manage to escape work. Dale A. |

Davey Camlin ... the name rings a bell?? Might he be factory employed, or am I confusing things? Henrik |

Davey Camlin was a dirt track racer who was killed a few years ago. His father, Donnie Camlin, formed a Bonneville team to race in his memory. Our very own Paul "Madduck" Elliott is a part of that team. The 1350 P-PP bike is Paul's S2. Remember the Speedvision segment on their effort a few years ago? We watched it at my house. Those guys did a great job with that APS-PBF bike!!! Just doing the math, I can get a pretty clear picture of how much power they must be pushing. I wonder what kind of turbo and what kind of fuel. In any event, putting that much power to a Harley and getting it to hold for that far is quite an accomplishment, my hat's off to them! They've gotta be the favorite to take the fastest v-twin award next month. |

What's interesting about that red bike's fairing is the bottom ... kinda looks like a flat floor perhaps? Sports car racers have been playing with the floor for less drag and more downforce for years. Hmmm. |

Davey Camlin's accident Kevin Atherton was seriously hurt in this same accident, although he did come back. |

I remember it clearly. I was in the stands, and it happened right in front of me. The whole accident started when Shaun Russell's engine let go big time while he was leading the pack at the end of lap 1 in the Semi. Bikes and racers were flying everywhere. Kevin Atherton's bike flew at least 30 feet up in the air, then cleared the safety fence and came down outside the track. It was the most horrible accident I've ever seen anywhere. |

Aaron, 2705 is being raced under the name of Davey Camlin #27...took a record already also. Seen pics tonight, where they had a bad storm blow in last night at 6:00PM & blew the pits all to heck. Record runs were delayed because of it. A mini pick-up was blown out of it's pit into another pits car carrier! It appears it was a wind storm mainly versus rain. The 1350 P-PP bike pulled a high 153 MPH today...good for them! I'm glad to see a HD product getting in the run in this class. Buell Brothers are in the 140's in 1350 MPG, a 1000 MPG bike, an Ironhead has been in the 114's only so far..plus turn outs. Dale A. |

FMJ, Did you post a story of what happened to your engine? I probably missed it, looks like a nasty incident. Rod failure? Stretched journals?
CJ, Did your engine blow too? Timing is everything. (Message edited by mikej on August 18, 2004) |

Mike, this was my old Bonneville engine and had seen some serious stress.(I guess the stock rods aren't rated for 180 HP)I was getting off freeway going to Laguna Seca when BAM,my leg was covered in oil and I coasted to side of road with pieces everywhere.Front rod broke just below piston and sawed its way out through base of front cylinder and around in a nice circle, taking cases, cylinders, front shock mount, etc with it.Salvaged cams, heads, and six speed. The rest is scrap.New Bonneville motor has S&S rods and flywheels.Next one will have S&S cases, also. |

FMJ, Dude, some JB Weld it'll be good as new. 650CC M-PF is now over 125 mph. grrrr. Is Terry going to take a shot at the MPS-PF/G with the Blast this year? |

Yep,he's still building a killer Blast motor with all Nallin cyl, piston, head and a Falicon custom crankshaft.Shooting for MPS and maybe M classes.I saw they are all bumped up. All of my classes are still good to go for Buell and Yamaha, with exception of MPS 650 BF. |

Sean, I think some a-hole got him the wrong fuel pump. The a-hole in question blames the girl. |

Front cylinder has major chunk out of it and a crack all the way top to bottom.Rear has slight damage to bottom spigot area. They were Millenium 88". David,A-hole would be the owner /driver asking WAY too much from stock components, live and learn.Probably gonna use that fuel pump on Yamaha Turbo set-up this year. Remember, without you guys helping I would have NO records on that bike. Thanks again. |

My rear ACC had two vertical cracks from the cylinder base to the bottom of the skirt, about 4 inches apart, covering the back side of the cylinder. This had caused the piece in question to splay outwards. Not only that, there was an arched portion about an inch deep in this piece where the rod had made its mark. Up into the bore there was a small concentrated area where the cylinder had been punched by the broken rod. I assumed, like most would, this cylinder had become a paper weight. As I type, the cyclinder is still with Stan Steven Tuning in Kent, but they are fixing it. About £125 job done. Rocket |

Jim, Appreciate the kudos, but you're the one that built it and rode it. It was worth it just for the look on the parts guys face when he asked me "what year make and model do you need?" I'm just glad I could help, and I'm bummed as all hell I can't make it this year. Sean, They're fixing it? Too cool. I think you posted pics of that cylinder a while back? If it's the one I'm thinking of I thought it was a doorstop. |

Total and blithe ignorance, complete incompetence, etc, take your pick--- Although I should have had a clue when Brian Nallin shutdown early on the last dyno run before heading to Bonneville saying 177 HP was "sorta" pushing the limits I have learned that lesson, eagerly awaiting the next. |

Converting a TL1000 to aircooled. I need to mock up the cylinders to get the measurements right for deckheight and all. Its for a Hybrid bike I want to build. |
