will a muffler for an S1W fit an X1?...(they both have 2 1/2" inlets w/ a 90 degree elbow)

Rosco....no much luck. Starting in '99, the frames were modified to have the exhaust pipes go under the tubes instead of over.

muffler not header..... i am guessing that the muffler will fit... try it out

Both are 2-1/2" but the location of the collector is slightly different. Last I checked, all the slip-on manufacturers listed a different part number for 98 2-1/2" mufflers versus 99-02.

That said, I know plenty have folks have fitted mufflers designed for a 98 onto a later bike, and vice-versa. I'd watch to make sure you're not stressing the system too much, though.

I fitted an old stainless S1 muffler to my X1 at one stage. The Z bracket wouldn't fit but a couple of stainless straps did the trick as used on the race can or the oe S2 muffler.

I think that it is a little more restrictive than the X1 equivalent though.
