my baffles appeared to have either disintegrated or at least moved around in my v&h ss2r slip on, resulting in excessive noise and horrific back firing! i know this can't be good for my engine however, i can't afford a new exhaust for at least a couple of weeks. is it true i can use steel wool for baffle material and or is there a better thing i can do just for a couple of weeks to keep my m2 from back firing? | ||

the SS2R should be repack able. Go to a bike shop that has dirtbike stuff and buy some more packing and just repack it. You will also need a rivit gun to put new rivits in when you put the endcap back on. | ||

If they have inner baffles that are removable and can be rewrapped, you can use steel wool, but it won't last long. You can usually find the fiberglass baffle material at a dirt bike shop for about 10 bucks. | ||

you don't need to re rivit a V&H's the end cap comes off with a allen wrench. | ||

my V&H could probably stand to be repacked as well, but the bike still runs good, and i LOVE setting off car alarms. is there any performance gain by repacking? | ||

I did the same Tripp what I did is just tapped with a mallet a larger hex wrench in there and backed them out then replaced. | ||

Not repacking it could shorter it's life. The packing dampens the noise but also dampens vibration. | ||

i hope using a larger hex will do it! if not i'll probably just drill and hope i don't screw up the threads, i'll give an update with my project results in the next couple days! thanks again for the help! | ||

ok, i bought some moose fiberglass packing material cost about $7 wrapped the resonator(perferated sheet metal tube) slapped it back together and it lasted about a week due to rushed install and cheap material(you get what you pay for). so, since then i've discovered that vance & hines has two replacement baffles for the ss2r, a medium replacement baffle, and a race replacement baffle, so to avoid problems i'm going to order the replacement(should fit better and last longer than the cheap stuff), i'll post again after i'm done. and yes not only does riding a baffleless slip-on make the bike pop and sputter but it also ruins the muffler from vibration(all mounting tabs are cracked halfway through). therefore i'm going to buy the factory baffle replacement for now and save up for a signature series exhaust so i never have to screw with baffles again! BTW the part#s for the replacement baffles are 21281(med.)& 21283(race) |
