Well... I was helping a buddy with getting an old Honda CB550 running after he bought it from a guy who parked it and walked away from it. It had set for four years... and the carbs need way more than TLC! Anyway... knowing I was going to need more than few minutes with it running to sync the carbs... I was concerned with it getting too hot setting behind the shop running while I was balancing the carbs. So, I got my box fan and set it in front of the bike and was very quickly aware that that was not much more than nothing! Well... for the second project, balancing the carbs on my old Yamaha I knew I needed better... and I found it! At Lowe's I found a Stanley blower fan that was small enough to fit in a plastic milk crate when unused, and set on top when being used. I bought two at about $37.00 ea and they worked great. They are a new product, and on the net I have seen them priced from $54.00 to $65.00 each! They have 3 speeds. Low... 1280 CFM Med... 1750 CFM High... 2180 CFM They run quiet, focus the air flow directly where "aimed", and each have a pair of outlets for such things as... plugging one into the other so only one outlet in the shop will run both fans. Oops... almost forgot the second benefit from this discovery. After I finished... I let the fans runs for just a very minutes... and in no time at all the heads and even the headers were cool enough to touch and work on if you needed to cool a hot engine to work on it. I hate to park a hot bike I just tinkered with and walk away from it. After working on carbs I am a bit paranoid to walk away for fear of looking back and see gas steaming off the engine where something snafu-ed, giving me an opportunity to test my new fire extinguisher!!! Rather find a puddle of gas than a place to toast marshmallows!!! (formerly dasxb9s - still annoying) | ||

Das, I picked one of those little brutes for work. Even in a hanger a bloody airplane gets hot and stuffy. So I pack my fan out to the area I am working in. Put it on low with it sitting close by. The #3 setting is for leaf blower mode... I really need to pick another one up and keep it in my trailer/workshop. | ||

Drag racers have been doing this in the pits after each race for years. They usually direct the air at the clutch though. |
