I was no I-4 and was riding about 70 mph and a rock hit my oil filter and punctured it. The oil light came on and i could not stop the engine in time to stop the engine for self destructing. Have to do a complete rebuild. Question, why would buell put a oil filter in the middle of the road with no protection at all. |

with a stock pipe, there is limited protection from the pipe. Also, the engine should not have self destructed that quick, even if you loose all the oil as quick as you say you did, the oil film should have protected the engine long enough to shut down once you lost oil pressure.....keep us updated on what the stealership says about the rebuild...maybe this is a chance to go for the nallin .44mag kit |

Look at where the oil filter sits on an SV650! Makes no sense to me either, but it seems pretty rare to loose one. Had the filter on my Cyclone spin off. It was pretty hard to miss. In this case "pretty hard to miss" means that my right leg was covered with hot oil, and there were huge clouds of blue smoke billowing from behind me. :/ |

Thats the first time I've heard of a rock piercing an oil filter. Sounds like a fluke to me too. They do make a cover for it though that might work to protect it. |

Well doing the tear down in a week or two let you know what needs replacing the dealer and my buddy said it most likely a rod bearing or lifter, hoping the lifter. We will see. Thanks. |

How long was it between when the light came on, and when you shut it down? I'm just wondering how fast the motor will blow due to a sudden loss of oil pressure. Was it 5 seconds, or did you have to move across several lanes of traffic on a freeway and continue to ride for 30 seconds before you could shut it off? |

As soon as i saw the light i reached for the kill switch and glided to a stop. It probly 5 sec at most. Any plain bearings are what go first, the roller bearings on the crank are harder to kill. |

That's scary. I thought a motor could last longer than that. |

Depends on the failure mode. I had an old Ford sedan once that spun the oil shaft hex rod and stopped pumping oil, made it 25 miles before it decided it had enough. |

that does sound real unusual. i have a friend on a blast, drives 100 miles a day. mostly gravel roads, construction zones, and teenager abuse. his only problem ha been a broken belt, and waiting two weeks for the local dealer to get him a replacement. are you quite certain it was a rock?, should one fasten a guard over the filter, or perhaps a few wraps of duct tape? also was it a factory oil filter, or possibly an aftermarket filter? sorry about the bad luck. |

NHRS sells a nice magnetic blanket that goes around the filter - could also act as a partial protector - I supose. GT - JBOTDS! EZ |

Stock filter. If i put something to protect the filter what will happen the oil temp the filter is acting as a cooler to. So if I block air flow to the filter or partially block the air flow how much will the oil temp rise and also what will be the overall outcome to hotter oil in the engine? |

I don't think it actually cools the oil any appreciable amount. If the magnetic thing is in direct contact, any ambient heat loss will flow through the magnetic shield too - so again, I don't think it will make a measurable difference. If you rig a shield that doesn't touch the filter, but blocks the air, the ambient heat loss might be reduced, but the difference would be small; and again, the filter does not radiate much heat out of the oil anyway. The oil will be at the same temperature as the rest of the engine, regardless of anything you do to the oil filter. (other than ride about without one at all. ) |

So why then would they put the oil filter in a vulnerable area then? |

Your the first rock fatality I know of - I usually keep track of stuff like that - rocks are never a good thing - dented rims, parts, and now a filter killing (of the bike) - I'd sugest stear clear of them, but sometimes life feels diferently. How is the dealer treating it? What will happen next? GT - JBOTDS! EZ |

Howdy, this is my first post on this site... I got home tonight to notice my 01 blast leaking... for the first time sense ive had it. it seems to be leaking from the hose coming from the bottom of the sump. then it connects into the right side of the case (starboard). I bought this bike about 3 weeks ago as my first bike. it had 1450 miles on it and now has 2500 on it. ive heard of this bike going through oil, however it hasn’t lost any oil until today. what do yall suggest ? |

New clamp for the hose, if it isn't the hose leaking, also make sure fitting is tight. This is not common, but anything can happen. GT - JBOTDS! EZ |

Normal teflon plumbing tape will help. Pull it, retape it, and put it back. |

ninjaBob. It doesnt get a lot of oil leaks.Just be sure the oil isnt travelling there from the more commom leak points:airbox or rocker gasket. PS SLO ride in April. You'll be about the same distance from the meeting point as the rest of us will in CA. |

So I found and fixed that oil leak. Also while riding about a week and a half ago I was doing about 80… and when I came off the freeway to a stop I noticed a lot of smoke coming from the front of the engine….. The paper gasket between the rocker box & the head broke; I’ve replaced it with a metal one…. Its back together now, running beautify. One thing I noticed while I was in there though is that the ¼ 20 bolts that were holding the rocker box to the head were stretched. They had a dark line on them in the middle. I think they may over torque them at the factory you guys may want to replace them. Thanks all for help, also ill go on that ride in April if I have the days off and my bike is running ok. |
