There is a charity ride coming up and it was suggested by my GF that we wear half lids. So I headed off to look at local shops for half lids. I know I can order some online for cheap, and will probably do that but what this rant is all about is this...$180-$220 for a FREAKING FIBERGLASS HALF DOME just because it has the FREAKING BAR AND SHEILD! WTF! and here I thought $20-$30 for a T-Shirt was bad...

Well if we are ranting: What gives with their non bike gear. High prices yet they are not made in the USA!!! Bikes are but not the cloths. 20 or 30 for a shirt ok if made in the USA....

Thought everyone knew that the HD dealer was in it for the money only. They couldn't care less for customer service/loyality other than the losers coming in to bolt yet more chrome on their overweight billet barges. Not to mention what kinda service Buell riders get. Latest slag aimed towards my M2 from the owner of a southside Atlanta Harley dealer owner was calling Buells Bulls as in Bullshit. Glad to hear their overpriced t-shirts are made overseas, wouldn't want an American starving to death waiting on me to buy one...

I agree with you on that. The only reason I have HD t-shirts they were bought for me.

Hey..., who was this dealer? I had a pretty bad experience from the dealer I bought my M2 from in the metro-Atlanta area (not Earl Smalls) and I'm wondering if it's the same one.

well, everyone knows that the T-shirts carry Harley Davidson from year to year. If they actually had to make a living from the profits of their motorcycles, they would be broke by now....
Just my opinion...

>>>If they actually had to make a living from the profits of their motorcycles, they would be broke by now....

Believe that ?

If so, step up and offer to run the only company in American to ever experience INCREASING profits for something like 52 consecutive quarters.

T-shirts are dandy and profitable...right Vern?

But, make no mistake, as little as some of us are drawn to Harley-Davidson, they are excellent motorcycles and if you asked anybody in the WORLD (that's WORLD) what one motorcycle they would have if money was no object, MOST (that's MOST) would answer Harley-Dvaidson w/o hesitation.

Harley-Davidson is one of the most legendary businesses, let alone motorcycle manufacturers, in history.

Just my observation....I'm not wild over everything these yahoo's do, but I do appreciate what they have done with my $9.00 per share investment over the years.

First let me put on my firesuit on to protect myself from the flames I am sure to receive...

Who cares that the shirts are made in a different country? I don't remember reading in the constitution where american business had to pay the working class to do work that people around the world will do for 1/10 the price? If people wanted to do work for a price that is comprable to the work they are doing they would have a job. Instead people complain that they don't get paid enough. Well, if a kid in China can sew a shirt for 2 bucks an hour what makes somebody here worth any more then that. Wanna get paid?? Develop the skills to deserve to get paid. It is not everyones God given right to be rich and have toys, but some people have forgotten that.

I may be a bit bitter because I work 60+ hours a week (40 at my regular job and 20 at my personal business). When I succeed and attain the finacial status I want it wil be because I earned it. I think to many people today think that because they are a breathing american they have the right to have motorcycles, boats, big houses and fancy cars. Well I don't think you do. So tell me again why Harley should pay some unskilled t-shirt factory work $15+ an hour to make T-shirts??? Harley gets the money they ask for on their products for a reason, people want it. If you don't, that's ok. Go buy your t-shirts at the discount rack at Walmart. Who knows, maybe that will also get you 3 more HP on the dyno....

There are about as many "American Made T-shirts" as there are American Made Televisions.

Lesson learned during the Team Elves shirt experience.

Don't be fooled by the Hanes stuff and some of the mumbo jumbo language "Assembeled from materials sent from the US by Houndourands who know folks who know someone who once visited the USA"

I'm betting few of the I Love NY shirts that go for 6 fo $10 in Times Square are made in NY.

: )

it's a world economy -- perhaps not the one we imagined way back when, but a world economy in any case --

had a friend, years ago, who used to rant that minimum wage should be raised to the point that someone working at MickyD's (full time) should be able to afford a house and a car and suburbia without working 2 or 3 other jobs -- when I asked my friend how much he'd be willing to pay for a Big Mac so that the burger dude/dudette could make that much money, he looked at me with that alert Airdale look (head cocked to the side, quizzical look on his face) . . . . .

ya don't want a 30 dollar t-shirt (me neither) -- easy, don't buy it! {grin} (btw, tshirts in the local honda/suzi/kawa/yammie store now approaching HD ones in terms of price)

me too -- hd tshirts as gifts (cept the one from Dublin -- they didn't have an Buell shirt, and I couldn't pass it up!

What American Motorcycles? Surely you Jest. Check the bill of materials on your Harley or Buell. Even more humorous is HD's bling bling offering.

Wonder if that applies to Victory Motorcycles. I really don't know anything about them other than they were a major sponsor for this last weekends Third Annual Milwaukee Rally which was put on by the Milwaukee area HD dealers and HD again for the third year in a row was not a sponsor. GO FIGURE!!!

It's not that I mind that their shirts among other things are made outside of the US. It is that they tout the made in America thing when alot if not most of their products are made elsewhere. I saw a number, dunno if it is true that up to 30% of the components of a big twin are made outside of the US. Not that I care, rubs me the wrong way when the guys riding HD start with the 'ride Merican made' attitude.

Buy Harley stock. Then when you see people buying T shirts, chrome doodads, "over priced" bikes, etc. you can smile and be happy instead of bitching.

Chaser for a slow speed charity ride I have no problems with a halfdome. Since my GF was going to meet me at the ride start with her car, I would stash my full face in the car until the ride was over, then switch back for the ride to her house.

Guess I was wrong.....

I DO care if a product is manufactured in the US or not. It dos'nt bother me if a company whose employees are paid fair wages, treated fairly and have a opportunity to excel in that company are pitted against another of equal employment opportunities fight it out over price, quality and workmanship to decide whose services and fails. Thats what a competitive market is all about. But you have here is the result of profitable companies getting greedy, moving business to third world countries, taking advantage of their poverty, or buying from companies in communist countries ( China ) whose business profits go to their military, whose sole purpose is to eventually control the world. Not to mention that when we, USA, import more than we export, there becomes a surplus of US dollars in foreign markets, the only way they can dispose of this surplus is to purchase US properties. Here they can set up factories to assemble their foreign product, pay the over priced american factory worker ( a write off ) and say they are supporting and providing jobs here in the US.
No, I make it a point not to purchase tee-shirts, shoes, hats, gloves, ( imitation) leather, or even U.S. Flags that are made in China, then try to avoid other foreign products as much as possible. I liken it to this:
Lets say you are one of five people in your town. Each provides a skill or product needed to survive. There is a total of five dollars in your town's treasury, ea. product or service is $1.00 Your town can survive indefinitely w/ea person receiving and paying $1.00 for service or product provided. Along comes %^&, he can provide your product for 50 cents. So someone spends fifty cents, shorts you a dollar, you can't purchase an item you need, and down the line it goes. Eventually you'll have someone w/ all the $ and everyone else working for that someone at 1/4 of what he once earned. Think you'll provide a quality a product as you once did? Think your quality of life will be better because you SAVED $.50?
Our liberal college professors would like to teach you that a world economy will benefit us all. They want us to think that the money we save will be money we can spend on something else. That his something else will generate new jobs to replace those lost. Well, when we ( the U.S. ) has finally farmed out all of it's manufacturing capabilities, we will no longer be capable to defend ourselves. If you look closely. you'll see that other than China, the world is being divided into specialties. Ea part having a piece of the puzzle, no one country or continent being able to rise up to defend itself, because someone else will control a key part of their ability, technical, raw product, manufacturing, tooling etc..

Okay so what was this thread? I'm sorry, we hit a sore spot with me... I will buy american first, but will insist on quality and fair market value, if it's not there, we go elsewhere

Oh yeah the price of half lids, like the man said depends on the value of your head, but i guess if you are only concerned about the top of your head, that does seem too high!,

uhm...I hope it was noted that the halflids in question, were fibreglass...not carbon/kevlar blends, but just plain ole' fibreglass. This was a case of a low end product being overpriced due to having a logo on it. This wasn't a case of a higher price equals higher safety.

Absolutely, I guess what I should have said the "Value" of you head.., As you stated, the point here is the extremely overpriced substandard excuse for a safety item, but then the guys who get them don't believe in protection, just image..

sorry
