I recently purchased a 2000 M2 Cyclone. The manual states the following shift points: 1st gear 0 - 15 MPH 2nd gear 15 - 25 MPH 3rd gear 25 - 40 MPH 4th gear 40 - 50 MPH 5th gear 50 MPH + My bike does not have a tach, I figure these shift points are for optimum fuel mileage. But when I run the bike in 3rd gear between 25 - 35 MPH it seems like the motor is really lugging along. Any info or opinions on which gears/MPH for back road cruising would be appreciated. |

Hmm for me its 1st gear 0-90 mph 2nd gear 90-120 mph 3rd gear 120-145 mph 4th gear 145-160 mph 5th gear 160--on up 6th gear..havent used it yet. Oh wait you wanted Buell speeds Those listed are definitely slower than what I always used. 1st I would run up to 25-30 2nd was always decent for around 30-40 3rd was over 40 till about 50 or so 4th was over 50 & 5th I didnt use unless I was droning on the highway & cruising at 55-60 or higher. You dont want to lug the motor. I know you said you dont have a tach so its hard to describe what 3000-3500 rpms feels like. But thats where you would like to keep it for just putzing around. |

You shouldn't be in third gear between 25-35 mph. Shift to third at about 40 mph. Then you can shift to fourth at about 50 mph. Don't shift to fifth until about 60 mph. Sometimes I don't even use fifth except for freeways. I used to ride a Sportster before I got my 2001 M2. I used to follow these shift points on the M2 and didn't like the bike. It vibrated worse than the Sportster. Then I figured out not to ride it like a Sportster and it's way smoother and a lot better than a Sportster! |

Halo, the happy cruising zone on a Buell is between 3,000-4,500rpm. Get a tach. Trust me. |

Get the tach. The kit is P/N Z1042.L and list price is (was) 170.00. It's quite easy to install yourself. Takes about an hour if you DON'T know what you're doing. I couldn't imagine riding without it. Your motor will like to run above 2500. Anything below that is lugging it. I try to keep it about 3K at cruising speeds. |
