My apologies but a search couldn't get me to the information I wanted without sifting through the 10,000 line dino vs synth debate.
#1 What would be considered normal oil consumption for an XB with just under 5k miles?
#2 How much oil would you expect to burn with the same bike on a four day 1500 mile trip where your cruse speed was 80 to 100 with occasional bursts to 120mph and the air temp was between 100F and 120F and usually closer to the 120 mark?
Thanks for any info.

Unibear mine hasn't used a drop and that was with living and riding in AZ for the last 4000 miles. Is it leaking? or your thinking its going through the engine and out the exhaust?

This is based on my 2003 XB9R.

From the first break-in oil change to the 2500 mile change it used MAYBE 3-4 ounces. From the 2500 - 5000 mile change it used 1-2 ounces...I think.

However since the 5000 mile til now (about 7500 miles) it has not used any. Since the 5000 mile deal there were two track days...one of them in 115 degree weather and still didn't use any.

I switched to synthetic at the 5000 and I swear it runs cooler and better as a result.

Now..with higher speeds you will be much more likely to use oil...that could be causing it.

My XB12S engine sucked up its first round of Synthetic oil. I have no idea where it went, but I lost about 1.5 quarts between 1000 and 3000 miles.

My 2003 XB9R uses so little oil as to be unnoticeable. It's been that way since the second oil change at 1000 miles. The 3000+ mile Northeast Adventure didn't even eat a noticeable amount.

My 12S used nearly enough to not warrant an oil change in the early miles. It's good now though.

23,000+ miles now, on my '03 XB9S, I noticed no oil loss. Maybe an ounce or so, close to oil change time. Every 3000 miles.

I use Mobil One 15-50. No oil consumption that I can see. I change it every 2500 miles.

Same here on my 13,000+ XB9S, I have not noticed any significant oil loss in the year I have had my bike.

I know what your thinking...I am planning a trip to Cabo from AZ in the fall and I was thinking the same thing. I recently (200 miles ago) changed my primary and motor oil. I went with synthetics. Mobil 20w50 Vtwin, and 70w90 gear oil. I did the dealer break in oil change at 700 miles. I ran HD oil from 700 miles to 2700 miles. I added 3-4 oz. After switching to Synthetics, I noticed it shifted better, and I ended up adding about 3 oz (engine) after the first 100 miles, but I think my 2.5 quarts was a little off from the beginning. This thing doesn't burn oil. I have to admit that I am a little nervous to ride into Mexico with my baby, but more for the security, not reliability...

Thanks for the info...
#2 describes the ride I took last weekend and when I got home the bike took 8 or 9 oz of oil.
Didn't think much of it do to the conditions but the bike had taken no oil in the previous 1500 miles.
I've kept my oil level to the top line up to now but another experience on the ride made me wonder. On a Sporty the oil tank overflow winds up in the intake filter supposedly to be ingested but usually on the rider's leg. The XB ports the overflow into the side of the engine and when I checked the airbox it was obvious the pcv valves had puked more than the normal amount of oil. If this is the way it works then this is a much nicer system and I probably pushed much of my "usage" right out of the tank due to expansion. My fan was on all the time I was slow enough to hear it but the bike never went into skipfire mode. This was with dino btw and I'll switch to synth at the 5k service.
The other thing was filling the gas tank to the bottom of the filler neck which is supposed to be ok. On two of our gas stops we took a bit more time before hitting the road after I gassed and the fuel soaked up enough heat to expand up into the filler neck and into my Cali required carbon canister. Then off we go and canister purges to intake, O2 & ECM backs injectors to min and still too rich so bike throws a trouble code and hissy fit. After a bit the bike would run great. The first time was in Death Valley and I had all kinds of terrible thoughts. Second time I had an idea of what was on and when we got to Zion HD/Buell at closing time they put the bike on the computer for n/c. Great people!
So if its really, really hot and you have a Cali model XB dont fill it to the bottom of the filler neck even.
