Firebolt020283: You get the William Faulkner "stream of consciousness" award from me for that post!

Bomber, I partially agree. HD made A right choice. The right choice? Who knows. HD does have the money now though. Maybe Bush can enact another tariff on sportbikes until Buell can come up with a competitive model! Don't get me wrong I love my Buell. But for those pining for a American Sportsbike, ante up:

Firebolt020283: Well, William Faulkner introduced the "stream of consciousness" technique of writing. It is basically the stringing together of multiple ideas and thoughts all in one big sentence or diatribe. Your post without periods or other punctuation made it seem like all one be long thought, even though it is really a combination of different statements. Good or bad? Neither.

Just for the record, it was proven that the Japanese manufacturers were "dumping" their bikes here in the U.S. They were selling their bikes for less than it cost to produce them because they mis- estimated the market, and warehouse costs were killing them. The tariff was justified.
And I agree that Harley sure made some lousy decisions; that's why their market share is so low.

Their market share isn't low... They sell nearly as many bikes as Honda. Including dirtbikes and such. Their profit margin (if I guess correctly) is a LOT higher.

Thats just here in the states. Look at the big worldwide picture & HD is no competition for Honda.

Duh

Who says you can't get your news from the internet?

Neither, by the way, does HD produce the Acura NSX. HD is not even a blimp on the Honda radar screen in terms of size. In fact, they weren't when they had bomb casings (US Army contract), Golf Carts and Holiday Rambler.

Honda is a huge multinational conglomerate. HD is an American Motorcycle Co. that sells in a host of foreign markets.

I have friends at both and would toss out that the Honda R&D Dept is larger than HD staff at Juneau. I don't think that's entirely accurate, but on an order of magnitude it is. Honda has more receptionists in Torrence than Buell has employees.

Ok...HD vs Honda sales in America is great news as you are comparing a limited line to a very broad one.

On a Global basis, adjust those numbers to strictly the market segments that HD competes in and the answer may well be even more spectacular.

Just a hunch, but would like to see the numbers.

Donald...I wasnt talking about the entire Honda corp...just the motorcycle division against HD. World wide Honda is dominant.

World wide Honda is dominant.

Assuming their entire MC line up that is most likely true. Now how do they stack up against HD and others in the type MC's HD produces? You know...Apples to Apples.

but who looks cooler
??? I thought bikes were for riding?
Anyways if you want looks & attention, its hard to beat a raked out chopper style bike. Pull up on a Big Dog or an Ironhorse bike with an obscene amount of front end rake & you will have to beat the people back with a stick.

I dis agree Dyna...

I ride with an old rigid Triumph chopper and a rigid Sportster (He's upgrading to an EVO as I speak). Both are absolutely freakin' beautiful choppers. The three of us built both of them by hand. The XB12R still get the looks. The older folks look over the Triumph of course, but only on their way to saying WTF? about the Buell.
