I was wondering if anyone has heard anything new about the KTM concept RC8 the everyone saw a while back. Is it gonna make it to production, have they abandoned the project any news at all. I think if they make it to the streets that would definetly be my next bike.

RC8 is cancelled I believe and the Duke 990 is delayed a year for more motor testing, etc...

Well I think I answered my own question today. I spent some time looking into this bike and found out that it looks like KTM is going to build the Duke 990 first and then shortly there after build the RC8 with basically the same engine. It looks like they are going to do the RC8 so that they can get involved in superbike. Which is fine by me I cant wait to see the RC8. I think it is going to be awesome. Especially after reading the reviews of the Duke 990. 120 Hp and 170+ MPH out of a 999cc V-Twin. I cant wait. Just hope it is somewhat affordable.

I still am seeing a closer alliance between KTM and some Harley dealerships. And now this. And the mind begins to delve and wander into thoughts and probabilities.
Harley-Davidson /Buell KTM ?????

It finally hit me. KTM's V-twin has to take the cake for the most PR for the most years without making product. They show concept bikes like Honda, but then claim they will be in production shortly. Three years later people are still waiting, while KTM is slowing sales of other products that actually exist. Betcha they aren't as good as claimed when they actually come out, either...

isnt that the truth. the Duke peaked my interest years ago, but i have long since lost interest. it is always amazing to see people still talking about it.

That, by the way, is the brilliance of Buell. Radical concepts in production. And every bit as good as claimed, IMHO. Hell my S2 is still a kickass bike.

What?????????????????

I was just rolling my Fischer out of the garage to go look at the KTM Alan Cathcart promised me 2 years ago.

Talk.

Is it accurate to say that Erik Buell produced more motorcycles for commercial sale in a barn in 1987 with a budget that would make grocery shopping have to wait until next week than the number of Fishers, Honda NXS, KTM V-Twin "Superbikes" and Yamaha MT-01's combined?

Is that accurate?

I can fly.

In as much as I enjoy all the jokes about KTM shooting themselves in the foot by introducing a new bike/engine combo years before it is ready for production, I do not agree that this has a negative impact on their current sales.

The reason is the new product appeals to a new market niche that they have not competed in before. Therefore any negative effect on sales would be felt by the manufacturers that are currently making products similar to the new model.

Consumers that are attracted to KTM's current product line up with still buy them as they are among the tops in their given niche.

Furthermore, if you consider the subjective buying patterns of the target market for KTM's new product and how often they buy new bikes just to have the latest and greatest technology, you will see that none of KTM's future competitors are hurting for sales.

The upside to pre-announcements is that it creates and maintains interest in a manufacturers R&D efforts concerning future products and can even add some credibility to their existing products as the consumer gets an inside look at all the care and nurturing that company takes in developing their products.

The Fisher, Yamaha's MT-01, etc., are not hurting anyone's sales today, but they most likely will have an impact when they are finally available. Additionally, they are lessening their likelihood of failure as they can monitor the feedback to what directions they are going in. Wouldn't be the first time a new product either didn't go to market as originally designed or was scrapped somewhere in the developmental stages. Better to modify the product or cut your losses while the financial impact is still low.

That is my objective analysis of the situation. Subjectively, I think it is safe to say that only folks that buy Harley Davidson's perceive their purchase as an investment that will hold value and that is a motivating factor for keeping them for a longer period of time than a typical motorcycle. That and profit (read: maintaining and hopefully increasing margin in an ever changing competitive market) is a manufacturer's benefit of implementing minor changes to a product each year and only introducing radical changes when absolutely necessary.
