Today was National Ride to work day. And why is it that every year on that day it rains around here? 2 hours before work was over the storms came through. It rained extremely heavy for about a half hour & then passed. Get ready to leave & the winds shifted direction & the rain came again. I waited it out for about 15 minutes & it passed again so I left. Got halfway home & the skies opened up. I was soaked in 2 seconds, even my shoes were squishy. Was shocked at how well these Dunlop 218's held the road in the wet. I could just about hammer it off the lights with no tire spin. I honestly think I could have wheelied in the rain if I had wanted to. Never had a bike with tires that stuck this well in the wet. | ||

At least you rode. I've ridden every day but 2 since the 1st of May. This morning was pouring so I figured I'd give the bike a break, especially since I'm getting it ready for the 'Big Ride'. | ||

I rode to work today but rode in a tow truck on the way home.  The battery in my M2 decided to call it quits today. The bike was totally dead, no lights, horn, nothing. I got towed home by AMA Motow. Bought a new battery and should be on the road tomorrow. The problem here hasn't been rain but brutal heat and humidity. It's close to 100 with a dewpoint of 72!  | ||

There were only two other bikes besides mine at work today. The same two as every day. I put up posters and everything. Last year was a much better turn out. I think they should change it to Friday, so the casual work day thing would help. I only saw three bikes on the way in and none on the way home. Dyna, it's rained so much here this year that I just keep the rain suit handy, and wash the bike the night before bike night, if it's not raining. Been lucky the past two weeks. Do the 218s have the same profile as the 208s? | ||

M2me, It's been that hot in MN!? Our dew point is about the same but we've not had a 90+ day yet this summer. Its been great lately, too bad my bike has been in the shop for the last two weeks. As for Dyna, I think that the weather gods just hate hate him so they decided to rain on his parade. Hopefully I'll be on the road again this weekend and it's supposed to be great weather. Nah, I didnt care that it rained. Actually felt good cause it was so damn hot. Now if I was on the HD I woulda been pissed because cleaning all the chrome would have taken all day. But with the R1 its a super fast wipedown & she's good to go. | ||

Well I did not ride to work today(rode bike in on sunday and been here ever since)but I did get soaked.Only mine was from a fire in a bunch of apartments and then the damn sprinklers went off giving us a a shower while putting out fire.I'm frikkin beat!! | ||

Try Yuma with a temp of 113 and a heat index of 119. Right now at 10:19 at night it is 98 with a heat index of 105. For other reasons I did not ride my bike to work today, but normally I do. | ||

LOL..... rain is all we ever see in Michigan anymore.. I feel ya there Dyna. and my waterproof boots are great, until my jeans get so soaked that water gets into my boots from the top.. AND THEN THEY TAKE FOREVER TO DRY OUT!!! | ||

Outrider, that's what I used to think, "Dry Heat", but when the humidtiy hits at 30% and higher it's just as bad as living in Southern Mississippi or Louisiana and dealing with their heat and humidity. I find it funny to hear them say that this time of the year, July through August, it's Monsoon season. Other parts of AZ get rain, we usually just get the clouds and humidity on top of the heat. You can have this part of the desert. | ||

Interesting...spent all my time in the deserts in Riverside and San Bernardino counties. Never would have thought Yuma was different. Hope it isn't as bad as I remember August in Ft Benning, GA., although looks like you just addressed that issue with your MS and LA comment. In OCS, we had to "break starch" everyday in the old style fatigues which most of us had tailored. Sure wish we had the new BDU's. Back then, only the folks in the RVN were allowed to wear them. Is there something WRONG with riding in the rain? I got a whole different attitude after watching an excellent rain rider privateer at Daytona one year. The crashers were all the guys tip toeing around the track. This guy looked to ride just like any other race. He was smooth, always kept power to the wheels, leaned, braked, everything. I started getting much more confident in my riding after that. Besides, it's the only thing that cools things off down here, I'm with everyone else, I hate the HEAT, much more than RAIN. | ||

The timing is off by a couple of days for this story but, in the spirit of "Ride to Work and Work to Ride, this should put a grin on your face. My new office location has several parking lots that get maxed out with autos, pickups & SUVs. There is motorcycle designated parking at this particular gate with 12 spaces, full car-sized spots with a painted line down the middle except for one, strangley enough. Every single day for 2 months now there has been one four wheeler or another parked in this one spot. These guys probably cruise the lot, which fills up in the morning fast, and then they find this spot which, even though it's marked MOTORCYCLE, is vacant. Us poor bikers in the meantime have to double park in the rest of the bike sized slots. GRRRR! Well, I fixed that. Yesterday while leaving, I noticed a utility truck driving very slowly down the lanes. Becoming somewhat suspicious, I rode over to the guy who, by now, had stopped and was taking something out of the back of his truck. Lo and Behold, it was a painter! He was repainting words like CAR POOL and such on the lot. We started talking and he mentioned something nice about the carbon fiber parts on my S1, so I took a chance and told him about this full width motorcycle space that I thought needed a white line down the center. He said, "Sure, I can do that". Bitchen I said to myself. So this morning, guess what? There is a line in the center, a Harley in the right side space and an empty space on the left for me to park the S1. We are Vindicated! The only thing that would have made this better is if had happened in time for National Ride to Work Day when 11 spots were double parked with motorcycles but I'm not complaining. I would rather ride in the rain than the heat! I have lived practically everywhere and the rain keeps the roads clean. 120 F degree "Dry Heat" when I lived in AZ. "Don't worry, Mr. Valdez, it is just a dry heat" as they load my melting carcass into the friggin ambulance. Some lady disappeared into the river here in CO on her HD. Turned a corner, hit sand and dove into the Poudre River. Damn deserts! |
