shoei's are great helmets, but pricy. See if you can get a good deal on Buell helmets, i got a brand new one from a dealer around detroit for i think 50 bucks.. or something like that.. dirt cheap.

mine (sprocket-the black one with the blue tribal star thingy) isn't too noisy at all. Although my 1st helmet was RF-200 shoei... so not much to compare too.

not the sprocket one.. it is an odd brand that i have never heard of... cause i cracked the visor, i thought it was HJC, but when i went to get a replacement, it was an odd ball brand. no biggie... cheap and safe is good for me.

420--Which HJC? I had the CL-14, it was a little noisy with the vents open. Been thinking about the AC-11, it's supposed to be lighter, would be nice if it was quieter, too...

I have an HJC CL-12 which is OK as far as fit, but is noisy as heck. Like the guy and MCN said, regardless of whether the helmet seems noisy or not, you should be wearing earplugs, especially for extending riding at speed. Wind noise will destroy your friggin' hearing and there's no way to get it back. I already have significant hearing loss (probably due to spending lots of hours next to big diesel in the crane my dad operated) so I try to be careful to protect what I've got left.

If your ears are ringing when you get off the bike, you have just permanently lost a little hearing. It adds up and is NOT reversible.

i dont wear earplugs cuz im always thinkin my bike is making weird noises (n it usually is)
but i just checked my lid n it IS the ac-11
100x better than the "free" buell helmet i got
almost absolute silence with the visor closed

My Buell helmet is fairly quiet and it is made by KBC. But then again I usually ride with just a brain bucket, so what do I know??

LOL, the only complaint i have w/ my buell helmet, it the visor will pop open if i turn my head just right... even when it is closed. I think the wind catches the little plastic thingy that sticks out from the visor. but that is irritating. it will kick it up higher if it is cracked. My buddy wears a new Shoei and he has "0" problems w/ it. but it was like $450.00 too rich for my blood (really my wifes, but who's counting)?

My Shoei RF800 is supposed to be delivered tomorrow. Will give it a run & see how it compares to my HJC CL14.

Im betting its a lot more comfy & a hell of a lot quieter.

I had a Shoei RF800 (still have it, it's just cracked) and had no complaints. I now have an RF900 and have even less complaints. Mostly, it has better venting with the rear vent added and the chin is closer to my chin so it has less of a tendency for air to get in there and try to pick it up.

Buell Helmets have been made by a number of compaines, so there's no one brand to yell at (or cheer, for that matter) . . . . . .

once ya get past 150 or so, your buying comfort and silence, I'm thinkin

oopos, sorry my preconceived notions (formed when Bell first introduced the star, their first full face helmet, and Joe Rocket was a Saturday Morning cartoon show) are showing --

HJC started as a low price company, but has moved up a bit . . . . .actually I've only heard good things about them, in terms of performance per dollar . . . have a open face lid they made that I wore for commuting (until recent event in the bomber household convinced me to do otherwise)

I can't get over the fact that a new top of the line lid costs more than my first couple of bikes, but that's my gig ;-}

I bow to your great experience and knowledge, Dana!

Now, where's my cork and linen puddin bowl lid, I'm gonna go ride my Brough!

WHAT?

too many years without a lid (helmet), too many loud concerts, with out without a lid (not helmet), way to much small arms fire

I use earplugs on anything longer than my commute anymore (20 mintues, generally below 50 mph) . . . .

yeah, and my knees are shot too

I've seen a bunch of posts at various sites about the visors on HJC's blowing up when you turn your head. I've never had the problem with mine, and I've seen several posts that say this is actually caused by not installing the face shield correctly. I can be a real bitch to get everything lined up properly when you're pushing it into position ("that's what she said"; )), so if you're having this problem, check your visor and make sure all the tabs, widgets, etc. are lined up correctly.

motorcyclecloseout.com has some KBC's with finish blems for under $100. I got one a month or so ago, hard to even find the blem, they called it an overspray. Best wearing helmet I've ever used. I know the co. isn't a sponsor but they do have some kickass deals and give good honest service.
