has anyone out there put on either a smaller rear sprocket or a larger front one to lower cruise rpm or pick up gas mileage? i cant help but jam on the freeway (normally i drive, but with gas prices...) and running 75 is somewhere around 3500 rpm. not only is that less than desirable for mileage, its also just the right frequency to make everything vibrate loose. plus, i cant help but feel like im hurting things when im howling along for hours at a time, running those RPMs. any help or ideas greatly appreciated. |

i put a 29 front pulley on my m-2. i like it. have to lug it a little off the line. some guys like to rev their motors but mine likes running at 3200 rpm. |

American tubers have 27/61 pulleys, European/Australian models have 29/55 pulleys. I have an X1 with the 29/55 pulleys and at 3000rpm its sitting on 120kmh which is just under 75mph. I've only just got the bike, but I think the gearing is great on the highway, but maybe a tiny bit tall for very slow speed work in traffic. I might change to 27/61 one day. I hope that helps Remember if you change the sprockets the speedo will read incorrectly - I've heard this can be corrected, but not sure how.

you could change one pulley and split the difference |

awesome, thanks for the info. i think im going to try a 29 on the front, and leave the 61 rear, any reason i cant do that? stock belt should work, right? how can i correct the speedo? thanks again, Ken |

looks like ill have to do the math in my head for the speedo. its the same way on my truck (bigger tires) and i really liked thinking that my speedo was on. are the pulleys the same for all years, i mean, care they all interchangable?

i think all the pulleys are the same and your stock belt will work with the 29-61 combo. it does shorten the wheelbase some. i think you will like it and just ride in a lower gear around town if it feels like the motor is lugging. i do a lot of slow road riding in 2nd and 3rd. later |

29-61 is stock on all S-2's and they threw it in the mix somewhere else also.Belt fits fine. The only combo that has problems on US bikes is the 27-55 as that is the shortest one and we made spacers to extend adjustment range on Bonneville bike.Euro gearing alos has some special parts different than US bikes for the adjusters. |

I still have a 30 tooth aluminum one if you are interested, its an old style with the thinner spline area, and requires a spacer ---which the idiots that packed the thing forgot to include.I found out last year just before leaving for Bonneville and had to have one made.Near new--- BTW,I just put a bunch of stuff on E-bay if you are interested. |

Went for a decent ride on the weekend, found that except for cruising on the highway, I didn't use fifth gear at all. I have 29/55 pulleys, and the bike is a little "jerky" at really low speed, so I'm thinking 29/61 is worth a try. Does anyone know if a 61-tooth pulley off an S2 fit my 2002 X1? cheers, graham |

Has any one heard of a "SpeedoHealer"? It's a little "black box" you can use to correct your speedo. I found them on ebay - http:///www.speedohealer.com I've got a 61-tooth pulley on the way (thanks Firemanjim ). It could be just what I need... has anyone used one? cheers, graham (aka gixxer851/lemonchili) |
