Got a ticket yesterday. Cop said he heard me coming. Said any pipe that is not OEM is illegal. I don't need any of this so the Drummer I've had for just over a week is in the classifieds.

Hey Vaughn, get it measured. I know someone in the Denver area that got one on his brand new stock '04 sportster. If your pipe meets the legal limit, then you will have the same problem with the stock pipe.

So what exactly IS the law? I don't remember seeing any wording anywhere about aftermarket parts for bikes or cars. All I have ever seen on the law books for a road vehicle are the safety requirements and legal tags. If any aftermarket part is illegal, then I would think 90% of all cars are illegally on the road, and shows like West Coast Choppers and Pimp My Ride would be raided by the SWAT team. Bull----.

For an exhaust it still has to meet the noise limits. And yes there are bikes like WCC that run open shorties that are illegal, but hey buyer beware. In the case of the above, this is more a case of the pitch that our Buells run tends to carry more and so I think Vaughn really doesn't have a problem, its just a case of a cop being picky. And not really using a Deciblemeter to really tell if the pipe is too loud or not.

"Said any pipe that is not OEM is illegal."

Ask him to state the State statutes that define that. I'd wager he can't.

Take it to the man....if you go to court, the cop has to prove that you violated a law or statute....no measuring device...no record...no violation...i think

I think most states have wording in their code that says that no modifications are allowed to pollution control or safety systems. It would not be the loudness that would be the problem. All of the exhaust is part of the pollution control sytem. Here is a quick one I found from CA regs ...

"(c) No person shall install, sell, offer for sale, or advertise any device, apparatus, or mechanism intended for use with, or as a part of, any required motor vehicle pollution control device or system which alters or modifies the original design or performance of any such motor vehicle pollution control device or system."

Yes, this means basically all after-market exhaust is illegal. As I understand it, that is.

Safety systems get very particular too, down to the number of square inches and color of reflectors for each side of a motor vehicle, every light color and position etc. Any change to a light or reflector is also generally against code. Again ... as I understand it, that is.

Ride Safe

Cleveland,
CA would have to shut down every H-D dealership if they enforced that law, as well as most of the other car and bike shops.

A few municipalities have jerk water cops who will ticket bikes for exhausts, yet the diesel trucks can have the loudest damn motors around & they dont say squat.

Some cops have this goofy deal where they will give out 1 ticket a year for noise & you happened to be the unlucky one.

Luckily where I live, the cops dont care. So long as you arent rapping the pipes at 2am & banging it off the rev limiter in neighborhoods, they dont care.

Hell I have straight pipes on my Dyna & have toured cross country with it...never had a problem with any cops bitching about the noise level.

After riding the race kit bike yesterday I wondered (and I know it's somewhere on this site) the Drummer was louder than the factory race pipe yes?? I may buy Vaughn's pipe......

I got a noise ticket once for the straight pipes on the ol' Knucklehead in eastern Washington after stopping for breakfast at 4am in some small town 24 hour diner. Sometimes one is just in the wrong place at the wrong time.
(Hmmm, I wonder if I ever took care of that ticket?)

I had heard a rumor that the Springs police were cracking down. Record the decibel level of an accelerating diesel semi, I'd guess you are no louder. Fight the ticket.

First let me elaborate (for Buckinfubba bennefit). The ticket was for speeding (10 over). Cop said he heard me coming and was ready to clock me. Upon further discussion w/him about loud mufflers he said they were cracking down on them (not stock is their criteria). He did not write me for excessive noise since he did not want to screw me any more ($1/mph over limit) and I was actually going well over 10+.

So, I could have lived with the noise but not with the pre-announcement of my arrival where ever I go and the cops having a keen ear to that Harley sound lately.

If I don't sell the pipe, no big deal. I will put it back on after I loose the points on my license in a year .

well as the sticker goes ..

Loud pipes save lives !

However, I was going to go with a Drummer, but i think it is going to be to loud for me and I don't want to appear any more antisocial than Joe Q Public thinks I am already.

$1 per / mile over the limit is sweet, I got ticketed recently in NYS in a rental cage at 21 over ..140 bucks straight up .

My bad...
It was $10/mph over the limit. $100 and 4pts for 10mph over for me. Guess it would have been a deal the other way.

Vaughn...I don't have a Drummer - I have the race kit muffler and am very happy with it...but from the great things I hear of the Drummer, I say you should hang on to it.

Buy a cheap used OEM muffler and swap them out as necessary...once the cops in your area remove the massive stick they have in their butts you can enjoy it again...

Speaking of cheap OEM pipes, I've got a stock pipe I'll part with for $100 plus shipping, if anyone is interested.

loud pipes save lives!!! Agreed!

But Colorado springs has some weird noise ordnaces from your city's web site.

But how do they justify a Harley Ralley up to pikes peak this weekend...How much noise is that...I guess they will have to give each and every biker a ticket!!!!!

I kept my stock just in case something like this might happen. Swapping pipes back and forth is a pain with the exhaust valve on the 12R. Not something you want to do on a whim.

I thought it would be cool if there was some sort of insert into the end of the Drummer to knock a few DB off the sound for around town and then pull it for those countryside weekend runs. Kinda like the Jardine Quiet Insert (QI) for their Buell pipe.

I commute on my bike during the week and let it ripp on weekends in the mountains.

Just remember, as I said earlier, it isn't so much the DB that is the problem, its the TONE that carries. Buells and H-Ds have a lower tone that echoes and carries alot easier then the IL4's higher pitched sound. just because you switch back to the stock pipe doesn't mean the announcement of yoru arrival is going to go away. Hard on the pipe is going to let everyne in earshot know.

the drummer looks just like a stock can. if you did not tell the cop it was modified he would not have known. also you say he did NOT write you for the exhaust. so what is the problem with the drummer? you were issued a speeding ticket. sorry about that, you will need to pay closer attention to your surroundings henceforth. best of luck.

Give me the noise! I'm tired of almost getting run over by tourist looking at the sites! Sorry about your speeding ticket, I feel for you. I got a speeding ticket slush fund, so when I get one I pay it.

Not sure if it's a state or fed thing, but in terms of loudness, Cali says if it's over 85dB at 3,500 RPM at 3 feet away then it's too loud. Maybe that's why the race can has two tips?

The race can ain't legal neither. That's why it says "Race Use Only" stamped on the pipe.
As far as who's loudest, the Drummer and the Race Can, only sound different at idle and cruise, under acceleration they sound a whole lot alike.
Too loud here is the same as Cali. Only not enforced, kind of an add on ticket if you decide to give an officer lip. "So you're gonna be an @$$ over a speeding ticket are ya, well here's one for a loud pipe..."
