Hi everyone. I am new to the world of buell. I bought my first one in april. A 2001 X1 Lightning. I realy like this bike, fun ride. Now here is my problem. At 900mi. while on a short ride of about 40 miles it quit on me. After letting it cool down it got me home. I brought it in for its first service at 1000mi. and had the dealership check it out. They said no codes so they couldn't hide anything. They said maybe bad gas. So with a full tank of premium I left the dealership and 25 miles later it quit again. Took it right back. Two days later they said it was fixed. Reset the TPS, Cleaned the plugs, (which only had 25 miles on them. Picked up the bike and it stalled at the same spot, 25 miles away. It will restart if you let it sit for 15 to 20 minutes, but will stall again soon after, 5 to 10 miles later. It stalls at speed, like someone shut it off. When tying to re start you might get a big bang out of the pipes but usually it will just turn over. It is back at the dealership. THis is what has been done; Before I bought it it had a new eng temp sensor installed, new fuel filter, TPS reset, and AFV reset. no one can tell me what AFV is. Then when I have had it the TPS was reset again. The bike was sold to me as new with 320 miles on it and it is under warranty but if anyone has any ideas about this please help. Thanks |

My guess: If the bike won't start, and it doesn't post a code - it may be the cam position sensor. The computer (ECM) doesn't think the engine is turning over because it doesn't see the cam position pulse - so it doesn't fire the plugs or inject fuel. It may not work when the engine cases are warm (it is under the nose cone on the right side - use a hair dryer to heat the area up?). It would help to know if the plugs are firing when it doesn't start, or if the plugs are wet, or if the fuel pump can be heard to start, or if fuel pressure is present at the Schreader valve, or if the engine light comes on when the key is turned on when it doesn't start, or if the lights work, or anything else that does / doesn't work when it happens.... |

Next time it happens take off the fuel cap and see if it starts. May be a pinched vent line. |

Thnks guys For the tips. The dealership started to look at it today. I haven't heard any thing yet. Hootowl, No it hasn't blown any fuses. John, I could hear the fuel pump running after it would quit.The check engine light does come one when i tried to restart and when it would restart it don't run like it was flooded from trying to start. It will pop right off like nothing was wrong. But it quit again shortly after. Thanks again guys I will let you know what the dealership thinks. |

i was gonna say it might be a bad Side stand switch, but that would kill the entire bike... and not let you start it.. but still that might be why it dies, mine did that on woodward ave, in high traffic, loads of fun, just poof dead!, i cut and spliced the 2 wired from the switch and never had the same problems. but also the Schreader valve is a good one, or maybe the vent hose from the gas tank. if that is clogged then your bike just chokes from loss of gas (no air getting in tank, no gas to intake) ok i just repeated everything they said... never mind. |

this may help. if at the time the bike dies everything else dies (engine,lights,etc.) then its the main circuit breaker. it protects the electrical system from overloads. if this happens the strip inside the breaker gets hot and trips killing all.after a cool down period (10-15min) it will reset. that is the normal operation, if system is good no problem. it is located behind engine on frame (poor location due to excess heat off motor). you may have bad one that wont stand up to normal load AND heat of motor. it may take 15 miles to heat it up enough to trip it, then you wait your 15 min. the process will repeat until corrected.i say swap it and ride. o-yeah H-D just had a recall on some main circuit breakers for this exact problem. |

Hey guys I got my X1 back on Wed. I finally got a chance to take it out on the 4th. I put 150mi. on it and it ran great. The dealership ran my bike on their dyno for about 85 miles at 80 to 95 mph and it finally quit on them so they decided to replace the cam position sensor, and adjusted the TPS. Thanks guys for all the tips. And John (99X1) you were right on. |
