While I'm on a rant about fake feminists, hurt feelings from imagined slights, I point out the ABCs of clear communication from when each "bit" is time consuming and takes resources. Accuracy Brevity Clarity All ignored or forgotten in modern media. You used to wear down a hand made quill, the good ink is expensive. ( see printer refills ) Then it's manual effort multiplied by Time, in writing, semaphore, telegraphy, and even modern digital life. Thus, I may say, "I respect the fine men in our armed services" and there's no need for the extra redundant data of 8 characters and 2 spaces.
