After an exhaustive search an optic was chosen.

The contenders were:

Generic ChiCom Colt clone. It's simple. Inexpensive. Nostalgic. And everything I need. Downsides are I've been here before and wasn't terribly impressed. They also have issues with quality control...to be expected given the $55 price point.

Next up was a Cabela's 3x prism. It stacks favorably to others in this class for about $100 less. My store had one for ages until I wanted it. I'll take that as a sign.

Finally there's Vector Optics. Rumor has it that these are the guys that make the higher quality ChiCom optics for everyone else. I found a "factory 2nd" on eBay for about $100 off. Whenever I've had thirty cal rifles with variable scopes I'd most often keep them on 4x. So it is.

It only has a 600 yard BDC, but I think I'll survive.

Primary Arms has some new micro Prisms, but they're a bit rich, yet. It's basically their micro magnifiers with reticles in them. People primarily complain about the eye relief and restrictive eye box...which is a general prism optic thing...but particularly bad here.

The only complaint with my Vector Optics choice is customer service. Let's hope it doesn't break

I do have the gun in hand, and it balances pretty well for the weight...which is the main reason that I wanted as little weight in the optic as possible.

Gregtonn,

Pat,

It would seem you are ignorant of the primary innovation in the AR design...the buffer assembly.
See that big long spring in the picture above? It eliminates bloody eyebrows in all but the most inept shooters.

It also allows the shooter to reacquire the target more quickly.

Feel free to redirect the subject as you usually do.

I'm waiting for your response to my guess about the gas system. And your opinion.

Sorry about my bad habit of ADHD thread drift, apologies for annoying you.

But I'd rather be right than win an argument.

And I haven't shot an AR-10 in a really long time, so all my recent experience with battle rifle "caliber" rifles is fixed breach, lever or bolt action rifles. ( battle rifle, aka 8mm Mauser, .303, .30-06, 7.62 NATO, 7.62x54R, etc. ) I suppose the 6.5 & 7mm Mausers ( Swedish & Spanish ) also qualify as "Full Power" battle rifle cartridges, but at the lower limit?

Imho, and this seems to be the dispute here, the locked breach & semi auto actions with rare exceptions, certainly do reduce felt recoil.

I'll go with shotgun design because I've more experience with them.

One Brother in law has a Franchi in 20ga. using the Browning Long Recoil action. Kicks really hard, when the barrel hits the stop and transfers the motion to the frame & stock. Feels to me like a 12ga. pump. With a weird double hit to the shoulder.

The other brother in law has a Browning ( FN ) gas operated 12ga. ( same as Winchester SuperX2 with added mag cutoff ) Nice and soft compared to any pump. ( or that Franchi )

And I've tried the Benelli M4, short recoil/inertial action, and rate it between a gas operated and pump.

But that's all subjective. The total impulse for the same cartridge should be identical, it's just how the impulse is stretched over time. Right?

So... Please enlighten me where I'm mistaken. You were right on the goose loads.

Goose loads good call.

I'm now curious about the current generation of high powered air rifles. Not being plagued by drones, myself, asking for... ; )

I strongly recommend the Crosman Nitro gas piston.
Breakbarrel single stroke, will go through an empty steel spray can.

Muzzle velocity is right around 1,100fps in .22cal with a Crosman premier hollow-point lead pellet.

Thanks, plus Crossman is local. Been looking at Gamo & Ruger. Air piston? Hmm. Never tried.

It's the woodchuck digging under decks and shed I'm unhappy with.

I have an RWS 48 with barrel shortened to 12." I like it.
