Is an incredible success story against incredible odds. Almost nobody wanted to publish a silly children's book. I watched so called Christian Karens complain about books that promoted Witchcraft. @#$%& them. I watched pundits argue that the pride the Brits felt for a massively successful book and movie series was because their government and culture was going down the drain and it's the only good thing to hold on to. A bit hyperbolic, but as a call for change, not horrible, imho, from across the pond. I watched J.K. comment that, sure, some of her fictional characters could be gay. I figured she read too much fanfic, but no big deal. ( I preferred the subtext that McGonagall & Dumbledore were secret lovers, but the Slytherin trio, sure, why not?  ) It's her universe, so, whatever. Then she defended some lady attacked for telling the truth about the mentally ill, and overnight went from the greatest author ever who Gays Loved, to a monster to be burned at the stake. ( literally there were calls to do so ) Her response has been solid, incredibly well written and clever, as you'd expect from the greatest living author, so I'm now a Big Fan. You can't tell during an author's lifetime, but I think history will show J.K. Rowling to be on the short list of most influential British authors with Orwell & Shakespeare. | ||

Sure, most of my college professors were left leaning, but it was not so common to get kicked out of class for disagreement. Hurt your grades, sure, but that's hard to prove it was unfair bias, and the kind of teacher that would give Me bad grades was probably justified partly because I would disrupt his lesson plan of pouring retcon pseudo history into vacant brains. Just like today, you learned to keep your head down and not be a nail if grades were important. ( and withdrawal from a class was expensive in time and tuition mis spent, but didn't hurt grades much. Plus dinged the teacher's retention numbers ) What I didn't have last century was a horde of same think Karen's enforcing Orthodoxy with Maoist Zeal, and the mechanism for mob cancel culture to get me kicked out of class, or school. Sure, telling a teacher that Sigmund Freud was a coke head with mommy issues really hammered my grade, but the Offended were unimportant, not a lynch mob with the power to Label me "Insensitive!"... And that Skinnerian conditioning seems the reason higher education causes certain ideological cliques to reject friendship with those who don't actively Affirm their beliefs. | ||

OT, but I read a pair of books ~15 years ago that I thought were written by John Ringo, but when I looked recently, not so. The story was of a couple who were preppers who were fleeing Chicago after some big disaster and general anarchy. They had a supply of silver dimes for barter, she carried an AR15 and he had an AR10. They fled west and would work at farms for food. Had a few shootouts and other adventures. Any ideas on who wrote them? | ||
