On an eerily related topic, modern historians have only a handful of pictures of the Yamato class battleship, the current reef that was the biggest, most heavily armed thing built by humans, and almost zero blueprints or details because the Japanese burned everything they could to keep it out of their conquerer's hands. Most of what we have was literally stuffed under jackets and taken home by a very few dudes who wanted to save something. Found by their relatives after they passed hidden under floors and in attics.
