She underestimates at least two generations. The folks who cannot even be bothered to get a license to drive a car are the ones she should be talking about. I suspect they are unfamiliar with the business end of a screwdriver as well. | ||

I'm lucky enough to know some smart and ambitious youngsters, ROTC, amateur theater, Bible camp counselor... But there's definitely something wrong with the ones that won't bother to learn to operate even a car. ( I wanted to learn how to operate everything) Maybe it's because mobility equalled freedom and getting out of my parent's view to go do things they might not approve of, like Redacted, drag racing, and Statute of limitations not certain. Maybe today you can get intoxicated or laid at home as a teen? But many jobs list "must have transportation" so they can send you to a different franchise or location to cover shifts where needed. Unemployable because you can't drive was a thing that last century was a mark of shame, or immaturity. ( minors were expected to want to level up ) | ||

I wonder whether it has anything to do with the thousands of hours of car crashes and road raging drivers available on youtube and tictok. Dying on the road was an abstract concept when I was a kid. Of course, I could not envisage my own death back then. Still cannot, really. I am immortal. So far. | ||

Today is the "at home", "remote" generation. People are LIVING video games. No actual interaction, no venturing outdoors. Sad. | ||

But it's not everyone. Surfboards and other outdoor toys still sell. True a lot, probably the majority, of, for example, bicycles, get purchased with intentions and go untouched for years. The majority of the work at the local bicycle shop is lubricating and freeing up brand new old bikes being hauled out again, often to the next generation. Followed closely by well used commuters. So all is not lost. But there sure will be a lot of aging folk walking to their job cleaning needles and feces from Starbucks bathrooms. Wondering why they never got the big break, and groaning under the weight of multiple game subscription bills and signing over their inheritance to pay Door Dash/Taco Bell. I just "restored" me and my kid's bikes. We go through phases where bike rides are super important and then sometimes they sit for months and cables and bearings rust solid. I live in North Carolina and I must say that something has changed over the past 7 years. In 2017, I could ride my bike to work on 2-lane country roads and people would go around me and not have a problem with it. I never got honked at once Now, I can't ride my bike for 20 minutes without getting honked at by some entitled Ahole who thinks, "how dare that person cause me to take my eyes off my phone". And it's not the "hey friend!" kind of honk. That deliberate long blaring of the horn that only means the f word. | ||

I think you're correct on rudeness change. The cause is harder to pin down. Like "climate science" it's easy to cherry pick numbers to "prove" your desired point, so I'm just going to observe possibilities. A study in England shows wearing reflective vests, and helmets changes the attitudes of drivers who consider gear wearing objects less human and are more hostile and homicidal towards bicycle riders who stand out. I don't know if there is an underlying cultural shift, but there are a few things that are self evident. 8-20 million more illegals on the road with either no driving experience or foreign experience that is from a different culture. That can be highly variable. A Chinese Army young man recent Invader, should be used to hordes of bicycles and scooters, in contrast to third+ generation Chinese ancestry Americans, who have a poor reputation for driving skill, anecdotally.  A Central American & Mexican immigrant comes from a culture that has different traffic customs. ( the "first person to acknowledge the existence of another yields right of way" custom/cliche of "stare straight ahead and don't make eye contact" etc. ) And literally millions who just got a licence for the first time, in the last 4 years. Second, internet anonymity breeds contempt. In real life. And the same awareness issue that makes motorcycles invisible to cage only drivers, where they can seem to look directly at us, while not processing the image into an object in their personal universe, also applies to bicycles. That's from a follow up to the 1970s Hurt Report on motorcycle accidents, analyzing the most common "turned left directly in front of oncoming bike" accidents. I'm unaware of a follow up that correlates IQ, or political affiliation, but the link to not seeing us because no one close to them rides is pretty solid. And I speculate NC might have more Californians now with the great escape from the Feces State, or Worse, New Yorkers! And we are still stuck with a nearly 2 year education gap from Covidiot lockdown isolation. That's not just reading writing and 'rithmetic, it includes life skills like driving and getting laid. ( plus a double dose of internet anonymity delusion ) I'd be curious about a study on road rudeness & Covid Vaccination, but that's not correlation with a drug, but the attitudes of the driver.  Overall, I agree that general courtesy on the road is poorer, no matter the speculation on imported cultural differences. I don't think that's you and your change in attitude. I've had to dive off the road and commuter friends have been "brushed" ( hit ) by cars lately. I am aware of a ( rising?) contempt for bicyclists that ignore traffic rules, run stop signs and lights, etc. Plus, your observation that some are Offended they have to share the road and resent having to look up from their phones rings true. Otoh, some of that resentment is justified. Both in the oblivious entitlement attitude ( generational? ) and I see fools run stop signs and lights all the time. I freely admit I'm balancing predictable behaviour ( obeying traffic signs ) with the very real fear of getting plowed over every time I stop. And we are both motorcycle and bicycle riders. The smart ones assume everyone else is trying to murder them. ( the cliche motorcyclist attitude ) & the idiots assume everyone will avoid them. ( the cliche bicyclist attitude ) | ||

Feel free to do a minute's research and pick a better word. The notable part is the lady, excuse me, queer person, is playing the victim card to slam the Governor, ( hard left D ) and "the system" she's part of. I'm tempted to use terms that I have no doubt she would call "triggering" or "misogynist" , like, oh, how about whiney? But that's not right, or proper, this is mental illness on stage and kinda scary. I feel sorry for her, but it's sorrow for a rabid animal. I get losing my temper. And while the Governor isn't her direct superior in the employment sense, burning bridges because he took away your case that was in mid crash into a public relations nightmare is really poor judgement. Context is important. Being a cop hating criminal coddling DA isn't unusual, especially in her Party. She was, in this case, being too obviously over the top. Even if she got a conviction it would be overturned, ( If I understand the case, I could be wrong ) and it would be politically embarrassing. Ruthless and savvy Governor won't tolerate that. ( I dislike him, but admit he's good at the slimy political stuff ) Plus, ( I bet the Governor thought ) it would pump the push to review her previous cases which is a ball of snakes that really might get Party Media attention. Before this case, it was just the sane minority centrist media complaining about her. Not a big threat to the State Leftists. ( as much as they despise and censor them ) But if CNN turns on the Governor? It's not that she's queer, it's that she's out of the closet psycho. If she'd shut up, regrouped, and laid low a week, there'd be no repercussions, lived to screw another Citizen. I've no idea what happens next to her. | ||

And while the Managers will suppress or burn any information they chose to ignore, ( or made clear they didn't want to hear ) after the disaster, there's always been some actual hard worker in the Agency who wrote up the threat and had the warning ignored or rejected. The far too common statement from the FBI that "he was on our radar" AFTER a terrorist murders people can be translated to "We ignored the danger because it wasn't Politically Correct". And the 21st century political interference of the Intelligence Political Leadership is appalling. | ||
