Nice summary/explanation of the eclipse phenomenon. Maybe I should think it's cooler than I do. My bank is closing during the zenith of the event as well. So are pharmacies in the area. It's as if they think people shouldn't have money and drugs during the coming of the Lord lol. J.K. It is a prudent thing to do to discourage would be thieves who might take advantage of the situation. All I know for certain is I will be staying home, and away from any crowds. | ||

Sewers, flush toilets, are probably the most important disease reduction inventions in history. See pre-medieval San Francisco today. Antispetics ( sepsis is a killing infection, ( oversimplify much? )) and antibiotics are a close second. I've got a paper buried in my library on anesthetics and surgery survival, but that's not relevant to plagues discussions. Food safety? Very good point! They didn't have chemical fertilizers not long ago. Organic agriculture by default. And organic means dung. Even last century, the outhouse was a vital part of farming. ( livestock output, chicken, cow, goat, pig, etc. was & still is the bulk of organic fertilizer stock ) Outhouses fill up. Then you dig a new hole, and move the shelter. The old hole is a rich garden fertilizer stock...pile. ( figuratively, you have to dig it up, to make a pile ) Most of the food contamination deaths in America in the 21st century is from E. Coli bacteria on poorly washed lettuce. ( see Chipolte Mexican Grill and Taco Bell ) Speaking of food! Fun show, interesting recipes and history. Frankly the funniest ones are culinary failures, but... Interesting is the fact, ( true ) that England was once a major grape growing area, back when it was warmer than the last several centuries. | ||

But I sold a car I liked, not because I got a deal on a buy back when the company, VW, was found to have deliberately cheated the admittedly insane pollution regulations. That just made it practical to get rid of. I sold it because the plastic substitutes in the wiring harness are soy based biodegradable slowly rotting temporary substitutes, and electrical system problems were beginning to cost more. And more. Over a thousand just from mice damage, who ignored repellent packs to eat the tasty wire insulation. I can do simple math. When repair costs exceed X then I'm better off with a low cost V8 despite the better mileage, plus Government raised the cost of fuel to more than Premium. When a supercharged Mustang or Challenger is a cheaper alternative to a diesel subcompact, then saving gas isn't the smart deal. "It's your fault you bought a German ( Made in Mexico ) car, instead of a Ford." Sure, but where's the diesel Ford? $80k+ pickup? The Government killed American small diesel cars. Regulation, lies, and deliberately. | ||

Every few years Hollywood goes on about the First Female Action Star, again. I get the hype idea, but it looks stupid to the half of the planet above median IQ. First sailing vessel? If they haven't based it on thousands of years of research, I don't want to be near one, much less get on board. I also recall the kite freighter energy assist module a few years back, sail my own kite canoe, and I built a Magnus effect rotor boat in 1976 out of a carpet roll, bike parts, and a rowboat. ( that freaked them out at the marina. Paddled out a dozen yards, started rotor spinning and surged ahead... painted rotor with candy stripe in red ) Rigid sail in 1982. ( concept in meme above. Mine worked. ) Helped design and make a high aspect ratio variable camber wing sail for a Hobie cat in '89... Hmm.. I know where to get carbon twill cheap... | ||
