Does anyone here know what rotor mount bolts to use to mount the Braking wave rotor WK042R to a tube frame Buell?

Years and years ago I replaced a worn out 6 button wave rotor on my 1998 S1W with a Braking wave rotor and correct rotor mount bolts from American Sport Bike. The OEM rotors use a bevel flat head design mount bolt and the Braking rotors use a button head design.

When American Sport Bike was still open I bought a rotor for one of my S2 bikes (after making the same conversion/part number to My S1 and X1) that still had a worn 6 button rotor (instead of the OEM S2 rotor), at the time Al was sold out of the correct rotor bolts and I didn't give it much thought at the time.

Now many life times later, a retirement, another child, a new career and a move, I'm going through boxes and found my brand new front Braking wave rotor still in original packaging, but I had never gone back and bought the correct mount bolts.

A source had said to try HD part number 3655A which are button head bolts that are a cross reference for the updated Buell 9 button carrier mount bolts but they do not fit, the bolt head shoulder is to big to fit in the recess of the rotor.

I know the correct bolts exist, since sitting right next to the S2 is my S1W with the same rotor (and I had done the exact same swap on my 99 X1), I just do not remember what the source part number or bike was to order against.

St. Paul HD sells the Braking wave rotor and has them in stock, but they do not know what the correct bolts are. the HD part number 3655A are correct thread pitch and length, but since they do not fit into the recess and sit partially on top of the rotor, they do not make full contact at any point, either on top of the rotor or in the recess, for a full mated clamping force.

Anyone done this exact swap and have notes as to what rotor mount bolts to order?

St. Paul HD says that this isn't for "Braking" rotor. I think someone at STP H/D should be able to answer that question to make sure.

BTW, correct torque is 20 ft./lbs

I'd say to measure the recess on your rotor, and email it back to St. Paul and see if they can check their bolts to see which set has a head diameter skinny enough to fit.

Buy an extra set too. My bike has the old style rotor with the countersunk bolts, and pulling those things out is a PITA. I coat them in anti-seize every time I put them in, and I still have one or two trying to round out every time I need to pull off the front rotor, which is unfortunately every time I need to change the front tire. Maybe the new button head bolts hold up better than the old style, but I'm pretty sure those bolts are my least favorite part of my S1.

I started with St. Paul, he didnt know what the correct rotor bolts were. his recommendation (from another source) was the 3655A which is to big.

The original bolts for the original rotor were the counter sunk AA0506-5CZ, the Braking wave rotor takes a button head.

measurements:
3655A button head HD rotor bolts: .60in (by using these I don't get a good mated clamping force)

Rotor counter sink holes: .579in

Original correct mount bolts to use with the Braking wave rotor have a head diameter of .577in (as measured installed)

I found some bolts on McMaster Carr:
5/16-18 x 3/4 button head, alloy steel zinc plated. head diameter .547in
Not quite a grade 8 bolt, rated 120,000 tensile strength, grade 8 is 150,000. (Rotor mount bolts are "normally" grade 8 - or better - in some cases, though I suppose in some other cases they might be slightly less than a grade 8....)

If only Al were still around!!

when I find them I'm buying 3 sets!

thought maybe someone here had done this and had good notes on the bolts, since mine came from American Sport Bike they had American Sport Bike part numbers....and they were done at least 2 life times ago (all three versions of doing this job were when American Sport Bike was open)
