Balance that against treasonous activities we see daily in "the news" and it's more than a philosophical question. Like the so called Patriot Act and other emergency powers ideas, these things are always a greater danger to freedom and justice than the problem they are supposed to solve. And that's a bipartisan deal. Until now, there's the high probability if not certainty, that who's in majority will switch. Happy Thanksgiving! I appreciate the forum and the opportunity to vent. The world isn't as bad as it sometimes seems. Anytime you want me to stop or mellow out, I will. History is a boring subject when taught for slowest kid, like any subject. A long list of dates to half memorize tied to unexplained events... Yet even the basics are vital to being a good Citizen. And decades ago the kiddie versions of The Pigrims and American history were good enough. Not so much today, too infected with relativism and not the smart kind. My experience is people tend to make the same 2 mistakes thinking about long dead civilization... 1. They had to be stupid since they didn't have... Pocket computers/internet/nanotech... Whatever. No, actually they were smarter, on average. Had to be not to die in days before our modern social safety nets and medical tech. As a history buff I know, says, "They did it that way, because it worked." In multiple contexts. Tech nuts know you need the tools to make the tools to... So you need metalworking to make anything durable, aka, not wood, and pretty advanced energy technologies to make hot enough fire to work glass and steel. Titanium is years of chemistry to refine the ore and produce inert gas supplies to weld it... Plus electricity. Whole history of that... What's striking is the explosion of tech in just a few centuries. From Kitty Hawk to The Moon. There's not just tech feeds tech, it took a philosophical shift. A very good subject for a history course, imho. 2. The silly assumption that you can judge a historical person with today's standards. Especially that they were monsters back then, ( and we aren't today ) which is wrong, both ways. We have plenty of monsters today. Don't know percentage but absolute numbers with more people, more monsters. So when you look at a Churchill or a King Henry VII, you have to have a context for sins and judgment. It's fair to apply near universal traditional values, so Churchill is a modern patriot who fought bad guys as he understood them. But also a Citizen in a Colonial Power. Henry wasn't a product of the Enlightenment so much. And started a series of religious wars, to get a divorce, since they didn't have reproductive understanding. A lot of history would be different if he'd had the right advice to get a better chance at a male heir. Judging Henry by today's College Racism perspective, he's even more a villain, but perhaps the blame really belongs with the rules he operated under. Bad rules, bad results. Like today's College cancel culture. Everyone is offended. Duh. So were we. It's insane to think you can demand respect, for your ideas, or personality, that has to be earned or it's fake. Britain is ahead of our disaster curve, if only because they are next to Europe. Which is ahead of them... Riots in Dublin, big political changes in Argentina and Holland.
