I took a GM training course recently (I work in a GM service lane), and it said we should have charging stations set up for customers with EV's, and charge their vehicles while here for service "as a courtesy". What??? Where's my tank of diesel, then? I get MY vehicle serviced...why don't **I** get free motivational "fuel", too???? DISCRIMINATION!!!!!! I'm gonna file a lawsuit. That's diesel-ism! |

It only costs a dollar or two to bring the electric car up to its preset charge limit from the not empty battery whereas filling a gas tank can run upwards of a hundred bucks. I am sure they have done the math. Maybe they think it will drive business. |

...times how many vehicles in a month? I'm sure they DO think it'll drive business. My point isn't the dollars, it's the concept, and the attitude of EV'ers where they think they're entitled to plug-in wherever the hell they want, and get "free fuel", just because...EV. THAT is my problem. You want motive power? Pay for it like the rest of us. *I* don't need to pay for YOUR fuel. |

I do not think it will. No one is going to show up for service with a battery that needs to be charged unless they are bringing the car in for charging issues. No one needs to charge while they are out and about. You do that at home. I think the only people who leave home and then look for some place to charge are folks whove (I cannot use apostrophes) not yet made the transition in mindset from liquid fuel to electricity as far as refueling goes. |

Local restaurant, 2 locations, has chargers to entice customers. Smart business sense. Perfect location for car chargers. Seems courteous to charge customers car after service if they leave it. Not if they're waiting, and absolutely not during service itself. Safety hazard. Putting the few dollars on the bill or not? Seems one of those cases where an overreaction to a tiny slight, ( they gave free candy to the kid, but I pay full price for groceries, for example ) can ruin a nice thing for everyone. ( what do you have against kids? You Monster! ) I agree that it's unfair. But think of it as compensation for the people who were fooled into buying a car for a tax credit and now spend 12 hours on a formerly 5 hour drive to take the kids to relatives, because they made a bad choice for stupid reasons. Sure, it's unfair, but it might improve someone's day. |

Btw, I assume they foolishly saved money up front and bought the small battery version, not considering regularly traveled distances. And it's winter. Btw, just had snow tires swapped for the low rolling resistance all seasons and my mileage jumped up big time... The change in efficiency wasn't a surprise. Not my first rodeo or winter tire decision making. I've been in the position for work and personal life, where I was depended on to "get there" no matter what. Went through a mountain pass in The South during a "storm of the century" and arrived at the police barricade from the " wrong" side. Nice policeman started yelling at me, ( road wasn't closed when I got on ) as his partner circled the minivan loaded with people and camping gear. His partner then interrupts the rant & points at NY license plate and studded snow tires. Immediately calmed down and asked for a condition report. Not the first time that's happened, either. One time it was looking like angry ticket time, so when asked for licence produced 2, "Want the State, or Federal? The Federal may take more time to verify from, let's just say, D.C.. " I believe that is "appealing to irrelevant authority" , but it works. |

Btw, the "planned" aka wished for with no actual planning, idea of using all those electric cars to feed the grid at peak has a few tiny issues. Tiny, like Godzilla. It requires replacing all the home chargers and meters with 2 way ones. It requires the cars to have that capability. ( some do, but will require software update ) It assumes all ( or a LOT of the ) cars not being driven are plugged in. It adds charge cycles and shortens battery life. It will mean you don't know, without checking, if your car has the range to get to work or any destinations. And I'm going out on a limb here, but it won't work with on road charging stations, because A. The chargers would all need to be replaced, and B. You'd have furious travelers stranded while they negotiate with a bureaucracy that doesn't even exist, yet, to get Permission to charge their cars and continue their trips. Sure, I'm a patient and rational guy. But someone raised and miseducated into a Woke Privileged Brat is going to lose it and rampage murder. It sure is a nifty idea, though. Other than the multitude of downsides. |

Charging increases a 5 hour trip by about 30 minutes. If you are taking the kids to see grandma, you are making bathroom stops anyway. |

I'll plead ignorance and assuming several stops with an hour's range and a terrible used battery. I'm all for offering the choice of an electric car. I'm not so thrilled that con men and rich guys give others no choice. |

Drive time is about three hours, and that is with an 80 percent charge. After three hours, I am ready for a break. Tesla warranties their batteries for 8 years or 120k miles. They would not do that if the batteries did not last significantly longer. Do not base battery life expectations on gen 1 prius batteries. A lot has changed. I have owned gas, diesel, and electric. I do not see myself buying another liquid fuel vehicle. I also would not buy anything other than a Tesla. The other manufacturers have not yet made the progress in battery tech, construction, and charge times to be competitive. The Lightning truck looks good on paper, but real world owners are not generally happy. Personally, I see plugin hybrids as the future. Small battery that sees you through daily driving, with a small gas engine highly tuned to run at a specific RPM to drive a generator for extended range. Best of both worlds. |

Very powerful iron based permanent magnets are on the horizon. This will increase the efficiency and power of electric motors, reducing the kwh requirements of the batteries, and the requirements for rare earth magnets. |

Here's something for all the Cali residents to "look forward" to... California must, under state law, shift all of its power to renewables by 2045 Source: https://calmatters.org/environment/2023/01/califor nia-electric-cars-grid/ GOOD LUCK WITH THAT. |

Hoot, Just because you chose a Tesla with "3 hours" range doesn't mean that's what lesser, more foolish, less well informed, mortals chose. I ride a Cyclone that gets over 50mpg while cruising at legal highway speed. While my previous motorcycles from 380-1100 c.c. displacement all got around 30-35mpg. Using my latest, obviously superior, bike as a standard is obviously unfair, based on personal experience, and measured mileage. Ymmv!!! Ditto, your wondrous Tesla is not in the same class as the Chevy E-car they told everyone to park away from residential property to prevent... How does my Buell maintenance manual put it?, Oh, yeah, Serious Injury or Death. I did specify "because they made a bad choice for stupid reasons." which I don't think applies to you. I'm actually a little jealous. I think I made the right Choice for my needs, given the options available and where I live and where I park. ( driveway, no garage, rust belt, harsh winters ) but golly gee that Tesla of yours is nice. As a purely intellectual exercise, I wonder which would win a classic Cannonball Run from NYC to LA? Your Tesla & my Rav-4? I haven't tried a top speed run to see how fast & how thirsty the Rav-4 is. But it's obvious I won't get 40mpg ( or 400+ miles per tank ) as advertised! And given the tiny gas tank, that's a LOT of gas stops. I'll ASSUME a Substantial speed difference between the 2 cars. Getting the data to fill in my numbers should be relatively easy, I just need a race track. A few miles to get to top speed would display the mpg number. "Of course I would never do that on public roads" he said. Ditto, you'd need track data to get your numbers, and then we'd have to make a guess at how crazy/skilled/traffic/etc. affects the actual speeds obtained. ( past Cannonball results might be averaged? ) But it's possible your car would win handily. |

My big complaint is my lack of Options for my #2 ( car/truck) vehicle! I "need" a minivan sized vehicle to haul "stuff". For a once a year trip like my 2 week Reenactment camp, I could rent, which some friends suggest. I can get lumber delivered for home improvement projects. And my tiny boat has It's own trailer. But I also WANT to haul my 77" long tricycle to wherever, at whim. And other things, like the ultralight aircraft chassis I'm still shopping for. Or more bookshelves. ( next week trip to IKEA ) A Caravan sized vehicle works for me. Rentals, do not. But that's a 22mpg machine in a Joe* world of gas prices and easily predictable gasoline shortages and rationing. Hence my Bit$%. I want a high efficiency rolling box. A Tesla Van! Or a near Prius hybrid. My neighbor's Toyota Sienna Hybrid gets 30mpg - ish. ( vs. My Caravan @ 22 ) If I can just get Elon to offer a rust resistant minivan/SUV with close to your Tesla car's performance, I'd be thrilled! Even better if I can afford it! I know aerodynamic reality, dictates predictable lower numbers. Punching a bigger hole in the air costs power. But a Tesla designed "Soccer Mom minivan" sized vehicle would have a big market. |

The model Y comes close. You can tow with it. Range suffers when towing. Also, range suffers at top speed. I think you would win a cross country race, regardless of my 162 mph top speed (electronically limited). Sure wish someone would make a plugin hybrid with a small range extender engine. It solves all the problems. I very much doubt Tesla will ever do it. |

LMAO. You guys. I drive a twenty year old Tahoe. It gets 17 mpg on the highway useing premium non ethanol fuel. I would love to get 22mpg. The vehicle suits my needs as it hauls dogs and people well. Plus my oversized body is comfortable in it. I believe electric vehicles are great for those that want them. Go Tesla as far as I'm concerned. What I'm not okay with is the forced con game movement forcing electric vehicles down our throats. |

My mother's Prius Prime fits that pretty well. 2000+ miles and hasn't added gas. I've been deliberately running it in hybrid mode to exercise the gasoline engine and burn the gas before it rots. Down to half a tank. Can I stuff a 77" long tricycle into a Y? If you, like my parents did, only drive to grocery store and doctor's office, the Prius Prime has enough range, call it roughly 100+ miles. Want to go to Florida? No problem. Hybrid, stop for gas. My guess is with TODAY tech, an electric covers most people's most needs. Not ideal for the long haul commute, like my previous 110+ mile out & back, and there's a lot of people who do more. But for urban folk, IF they are "rich enough" to have a garage, perfect for most. Winter is an issue! My opinion is a well designed hybrid, Today, is the optimum choice for those that pure electric doesn't work. ( urban folk who can't plug in at home, long haul runners, etc. ) But for heavy load pickup truck types, a diesel might be better than a hybrid, and sporty car like a Mustang? Go big power gasoline... Or big power electric. There's a few high power hybrids, like the Koenigsegg, but for mortals, pick one fuel or another. Of course that's subject to change. I agree Tesla probably won't make a hybrid. Not their specialty, and zero experience with IC engines. But I could see a tiny turbine range extender option, running on diesel, as a spin-off from SpaceX tech. Tell Elon! He might love it! Next try for Starship/Heavy, 420! |
