I just got my 12 airbox in...Thanks Dave. I installed it and took it out for a spin. It doesn't feel any different. Can somebody explain to me what the difference is between the 9 and the 12? I can see the difference, but I'm curious how the difference between them actually affects performance. |

I believe when you are talking about such a small gain, it may be hard to even notice. Some riders of the swap out swear by it. I believe the Dyno shows the gain. |

What other mods do you have? I'd think it works better when you've got the race-kit or something similar fitted. |

The stock 9 air box has that dome to it. At about >80% open throttle this dome can cause a low-pressure pocket that slows down the airflow. The 12 air box removes this dome and adds a post that causes the air to swirl like a whirlpool. This increases airflow and has better fluid dynamics. Now you might be asking your self, why would Buell put that dome on the 9’s? I would guess production reasons. Chances are using a stock air filter and with the snorkel you would not get enough airflow to cause the low-pressure pocket. When I installed my 12 air box I already had the K&N and removed the snorkel. What I noticed right a way was the bike rev’d better and the throttle seemed to have a better response. --D |

I noticed the the difference instantly. I first put it on when my 9R was bone stock . How many miles do you have logged on your bike ??? |

I have the race kit and about 8,000 miles on my bike. Maybe I'm just not sensitive enough to feel the difference such a small performance upgrade will make. |

I don't think it's so much of a gain in horsepower that I noticed. It seemed more to smooth out the rough edges. Smooth = Faster This is of course only my opinion. : Oh yeah, I've got the Buell Rust Race Kit, just in case it makes a difference. edited by glitch on June 14, 2004 |

The difference on my otherwise stock XB9S was noticeable right away; bike pulls harder. My Buell tech Kevin said that he noticed that my 9 seemed "peppier" than the other 9's he has test-ridden over the last year. He did not know it had the 12 airbox cover when he rode it. My Buell salesguy Spencer put it on his 9S already equipped with race kit. He noticed a smoother throttle response. Or maybe it is mass hypnosis with the placebo effect working? |

Would I see any benefit if I put a 12 airbox and a K&N filter on my 9 without any other modifications? |

The airbox by itself may not make much difference since the stock filter can't flow enough to fully utilize even the stock XB9R air filter cover. Try the K&N filter as well...trust me it is money well spent. The ECM will need about 10-15 miles of 60-70 MPH riding in top gear to adjust but it should make the bike pull better in roll ons and getting onto the freeway. |

1-3 HP is hard to feel in the seat, but I notice a much better throttle response and not to say that stock was bad but I wont go back. |

Has anyone else used a 12 airbox and a K&N filter on an xb9 without any other modifications? |

Ok, I went out for a good ride last night. I did feel a difference. It's seems like it's all it the higher rpms that you feel it. The throttle felt smoother in the higher rpms and maybe had a tiny bit of extra kick to it. Not a bad upgrade for under 50 bucks. |

Not a bad upgrade for under 50 bucks. May very well be the only upgrade for under $50. |

I felt the improvement in smoothness and pickup straightaway, adding the race filter just put more frosting on the cake |

I can't tell that mine did anything. Does anyone have dyno results they can post with and without the XB12 airbox? Thanks, Keith |

signguy- it seems you notice the results best when putting the 12 airbox on a stock bike. I first put the 12 box on mine after riding it 17k miles stock. I could feel up to a 3 hp boost instantly. It sounds hard to believe but its true. I rode it for a few days then put the K&N filter. The filter adds to the mix but did'nt make a huge difference on the bike after riding it 3days with the 12 airbox being my only mod. |

If you already have the race kit (Race ECM, filter, exhaust, and snorkel removed), the difference may not be noticeable. I don't know, have not experienced that. However, once you install it, you need to ride over 10 miles at moderate rpm so that the ECM "learns" the new setup. My '03 XB9R went from bone stock to these mods all at once: XB12 airbox, K&N filter, NGK iridium plugs, and snorkel removal. Changes I noticed included quicker throttle response, bike was slightly louder, and seemed to have slightly more power (seat of the pants). Mike. |
