I am going to a large motorcycle swap meet this weekend. I have an unregistered 2009 1125R which I purchased from out of state during the Buell-shutdown fire sale. Thus this bike would be really only a candidate for a track-only bike, part out bike or a source for parts in another project. I looked into trying to get it registered in CA, but I believe original sales tax (never paid) and back registrations for many years would have to be paid. Not 100% on that but the process looked convoluted and expensive (just like most things in CA.) I was thinking about asking $2k for it and taking the first $1,500 that was offered. I checked ebay for parts and it looks like OEM parts from salvaged bikes are in short supply, but I realize the market for the 1125 is small and shrinking. Anyone that is more familiar with parting out a bike and/or current market pricing for the 1125s? I would love to get your opinion. | ||

You need a Manufactures Certificate of Origin. With that it starts as a newly sold vehicle. Old registration would disappear. New registration and sales tax would apply. That's my understanding of such. | ||

I am certain you can get more than $2000 out of it if you take the time to part it out. Were I still in CA, I'd buy it for $1500 in a heart beat, and taking a run at getting it registered. I agree with Coastrambler, pretty sure you need the MSO, but who knows you might be alright with what ever paperwork you did get when you bought the bike. I would encourage you to physicality go down to DMV with all paperwork you do have, and politely asking what could be done. I know it's a massive pain having had spent hours and hours at CA DMV over the years, but you might get pleasantly surprised. I'd volunteer to do it, but I'm 2000+ miles away. I do have the "Certificate of Origin for a Vehicle." I have had other people tell me I can get it registered if I tell the DMV I have lost all the paperwork. Someone said if the VIN isn't in the system, it is a "clean slate." Coastrambler, you believe sales tax and current year registration fees would be due? Would sales tax be from the original purchase price or an estimated current value as a 13 year old motorcycle? 1) I have the Certificate of Origin. This would be the extent of the paperwork. 2) Never titled in CA, purchased from TX. 3) It currently has about 12,500 miles as I used the license plate from my other 1125R to put on street miles (believing I needed to have a certain number of miles to register in CA). It is probably too late to so anything for before this week's swap meet, but maybe I get it registered and try to sell in the SPring... (Message edited by fresnobuell on October 12, 2022) | ||

Have never had to actually do this. The state always wants money for something. I've had very pleasant dealings with DMV recently. Also, if you're a AAA member they can give you good info and help. | ||

We have a contact for DMV. According to our contact, there is no "rush" titling, so I am out of luck for this weekend's swap meet. If it doesn't get sold this weekend, then I am going to try to get it titled and try to sell it in the Spring. Titling should add some value. I think I am going to ask $2,500 OBO as it has some aesthetic issues, but still runs like a beast. | ||

If you have an MSO, why not just sell it with that and let the next owner register it as new in their state? I imagine CA is one of the hardest to work with for something like that. If I wasn't 2000 miles away, I'd buy it for $2K. I don't think I'd have any trouble titling it in IL. |
