'09 CR with 37K miles. Ridden quickly but respectfully and not abused. I've finally encountered the failure that several (many) others have; rear wheel bearing on the sprocket side disintegrated. For information, I replaced the drive belt at 32K miles. It was extremely tight and I suspect this may have contributed to the bearing failure. I have some questions for those who have gone before... 1. Please see the attached pictures. Is the wheel wrecked or will it be OK with new bearings? 2. Assuming the wheel is still usable, what is the recommended technique for removing the existing bearings? I can't get behind the outer races to drive them out.

For removing the outer bearing section you have to weld a piece of iron on the inside of the bearing so you can hammer it out from the other side with some long iron through the wheel hub. Tab it from side to side , so it comes out square and not damaging the seat of the bearing hole. You need a new inner axle pipe and two new bearings. There are lots of threads about this kind of mishaps and repairs. Do a search with the Google page of this forum. It's above on the left. |

yup, welding a fender washer would be the way to go. i had to dremel an outer race out while on a road trip. that took a while. |

Gentlemen, Thank you for the pointers. I used a Dremel tool with an abrasive cutting wheel. I was able to cut through the stuck outer bearing race in two places, leaving a very small thickness of the race in place. I gave it a healthy whack with a hammer and chisel which broke the remaining thickness and the race fell out in two pieces. It was tedious but now that I've done it once, as with most things, the next time I do it, it'll be faster and easier. I suggest making two cuts 180 degrees apart on opposite sides of the race and cutting on a bias (as seen in the picture) to avoid cutting into the aluminum wheel hub. Thankfully, my wheel is still serviceable.

I've had to dremel out an outer bearing race in the past as well. PITA for sure. My bearing failures always came soon after a new belt. |

New bearings are in the freezer, the rear wheel, sans bearings, is out in the driveway baking in the Texas sun. Bearings: 32 degrees, Wheel: 150 degrees. I used the old, still intact, bearing as a driver, a block of wood and a big hammer. The new bearings went in like no buddy's business and now I'm back in business. |

Glad to hear the install went well and you are back in Business! Richard, I had two belts break on me, and a third that was damaged, which I preemptively changed before it broke. This was on a 09 Uly and I live on a dirt and gravel road which I'm sure played a part. |
