Hey there forum...got a head-scratcher for you...

Two months ago, without ever giving me a moments pause with reliability, while at a red light the EBR died on me - like I hit the kill switch...

When I turn on the ignition the display boots up, and the fuel pump primes (like usual)...but when I hit the starter it does not turn over and the system browns out...

Today was the first time I got a chance to look at it (took a "mental health" sick day from work)...

Assuming the 2014 (neglected) lithium battery was to blame, I tried both the riding mower's battery (same result) and the HUGE harley battery (same result)...

Voltage regulator fails one of my four tests on all three stator inputs... The Stator itself shows open resistance on all three coil outputs...

Okay, assuming there was some catastrophic electrical failure that blew all three stator coils and nuked the regulator in the process...I continued on...

Removing the regulator (and disconnecting the stator) I connect the mower battery again - this time with a battery charger connected to simulate a charging system...thinking if there was some electrical short in the charging/regulation system I could safely bypass that brownout point and turn over the bike...

Alas - same result - brown out...

So I am left with some questions - and some level of fear...

Electrically, I could see where either the starter itself, or it's solenoid could have gone bad and cause a brown out when attempting to start the bike...HOWEVER, neither of those possibilities should have randomly caused the bike to stall out at a red light after riding hard for 25minutes coming home from work...

So...the fear is that this is a mechanical issue - not electrical...if for some reason the engine had seased up...the starter tries to engage, and no movement causes the electrical over current that browns out the system...

Thoughts...?

Put it in high gear and see if the motor will turn by pushing (rocking) the bike.

Check the engine cases under the starter for physical cranks and in the front.

I put the bike in 6th and popped the clutch while pushing it...all that did was leave black tire skid marks on my garage floor...no indication of engine movement...

I'll have to get my lift setup (just bought the place) in order to take the lower body work off and inspect engine cases and check the oil...

I've forgotten which side (left maybe), pull the plug out of the center of the engine case, there is a bolt in the end of the crankshaft that you can use to try to turn just the crank. It's mostly used when adjusting the valves.

Good luck.

Greetings everyone...

At long last (almost three years), I took the time to dust off the RX and begin to disassemble the engine to determine the problem...

Turns out, one of the six flywheel/rotor bolts slowly worked itself out, impacting the stator, shearing off, and wedging itself in the assembly...!

Thankfully I was idling at the time... : )

The engine now turns using a ratchet on the crank...whew!

Now for sourcing the parts/tools to replace and re-assemble... : )

This would be why my initial electrical tests indicated:
"The Stator itself shows open resistance on all three coil outputs... "

Oooph!!

Thank you for the update. This shows how poorly designed and built Buells are.

That's funny... No...sorry, not your broken fastener.
First picture, if you "quickly"...glance at the upper right case fastener hole... The way that the gasket is sitting, it looks like a broken off tap.

Yeah, sad to hear / see your problem(s). And yeah again, a VERY good thing that the engine (not you !) was at idle speed.

The remaining five bolts weren't even finger snug...I was able to back them out with two fingers... : (

Any metal get into the oiling system or did you get lucky?
Probably overkill but worth considering.

Not any current indication of contamination in the oil system...

The damage happened so fast (at idle), it did not have a chance to circulate... By the damage pattern on the Stator, it did not even complete one revolution of the engine before the bolt head got wedged and stalled the engine.

I saw no instances of shavings in the oil, on the plug magnet, or in the filter...

Those washers look pretty sweet... : )

Any updates? I'm curious as to how the repair is going / went.

New parts installed - Aagaard came through with the new stator & rotor for me.

Just took it for the first ride since putting everything back together.

Now I am chasing a P0629 error code - along with the resulting hesitation and rough lurching - but she runs again! : )

Good deal, I'm glad you got it back together and running again, kickass! Hopefully you'll chase down the error code without too much fuss.

Great to hear ya have it running again.
She has been sitting how long? With the current crappie gas we have, a full drain & cleaning fuel system may be in order?

Tim @ IDS got me squared away with the code issue.

Turns out when the stator got ground up, enough of an electrical transient came through that it fried my flyback diode on the fuel pump. Installing an external one across the wiring solved the fuel pressure issue.

The bike had been out of commission for 3.5 years while I debated whether to take it to a shop for exploratory surgery, or to try my hand at working on it myself.

Before I ever tore into the engine, I drained the gas and re-wired & re-potted the fuel pump connector & replaced the float valve - the low fuel light had been on solid since new.

While everything was apart, I sent the injectors to Aagaard Moto for cleaning/testing.

Fresh E-Free gas, secondary exhaust delete, 46T rear sprocket, and the ECM flash from IDS, and she is much more "streetable"...

Can't thank Jens enough from NCCR for walking me through my mechanical issues, Aagaard for providing the parts I needed, and Tim at IDS for resolving my electrical gremlin. : )
