After all, surrender is certain jail time. But if you murder the cop, you might get away totally free, and if you fail, there's no downside." The year after the law went into effect, the number of cops killed, doubled. It's not a perfect comparison, normally law abiding citizens don't generally have the lack of Morals typical of drug dealers. But if carrying a gun in the park ( a location in many big cities where the odds of rape and robbery are high ) has the same penalty if you have a permit or not? Then why spend the time, money, and effort to get a permit, if It's only effect is to put you on a list that ( in real life, daily, NOW ) makes a cop pulling you over really nervous, or potentially, in the near future, invites a 3am. Armed invasion by masked, hostile, and frightened thugs. ( if you were a cop ordered to raid a home to take guns away from someone you KNOW is armed, you should be nervous ) As I said, it's different than the stupid drug law example. No permit means you won't practice at the range. ( where a passing police officer may ask you for your papers ) You can't buy a new pistol from a reputable dealer. You also are deliberately choosing to commit a criminal act. ( agree with law or not ) While in the stupid drug law case, the perpetrator has already chosen to be a criminal. ( agree with law or not ) I'm not familiar with the intricacies of NY law...but here in MD, there is one permit to purchase/own handguns (HQL, or Handgun Qualification License), and another on top of that to carry (Wear And Carry Permit). I'd think unless Hocul has voided all purchase permits (not outside the realm of possibility, given her holier-than-thou attitude about...everything), an OWNER could still go to the range; practice; protect their private property; etc. Just not carry it in public, where actual criminals live and take action against law-abiding innocent citizens. I've also noted that most cops here in MD share OUR views. When my carry permit had restrictions on it ("good and substantial reason" clause requiring/permitting carry only while conducting company business, now removed from MD law thanks to SCOTUS), I had troopers tell me "sound company? Keep a broken speaker in your car. You're working. Taking gear to get repaired." Also advised that any meal out was a "business networking meeting". Similar to the old meme "if you keep a bat in your car, also keep a glove and a ball - your lawyer will thank you!". | ||

In NY, as of last week, there's one permit required to purchase, but it can list carry or home & range only. Technically 2? And you can apply to convert/upgrade to carry from just home & range. Granting the permit is utterly dependent on the whim of your County Sheriff. I'm a few hundred yards from the County line. In my country it's usually over a year wait and rather restricted. Average depending on year. Just south of me, it's an average 6 months and fairly easy. I have noticed that police pay attention to county of issue. In a "If you got a permit in ( hard to get ) county, you must be ok, or connected" way. They also issue traffic tickets to outsiders ( plates issued in different counties ) more. Less chance of having to go to court. ( practical, if sometimes annoying ) That's probably SOP world wide. I don't recommend not getting all the appropriate paperwork and going outlaw. Not just because it's stupid to advocate law breaking. Good advice on the ball & glove. | ||

This just in: The supreme court says that certain sensitive areas can be declared as places off limits for concealed carry. Governor Hochul has declared the state of New York as a sensitive area. Put your guns away gentlemen, everyplace is off limits. | ||

My #1 rule for safety is; CARRY! If everybody carries, There will be weapons and spare ammo all around me. Now, if you are the "one weapon only" carrier that never trains on another weapon, shame on ya. I want to be able to pick up any weapon on the grey man's battle field and use it. If I have to cross Indy on foot to get home, I need an empty bag to carry what I find. Because I will not be carrying enough from the start. Sure most confrontations end in no shots fired, and that is a win in that battle, but the war is protracted. I hope to make it through life without ever needing to fire another round. However, I'll train like I can't draw from the armory without a certified card. Yous do yous and I'll do me. You shoot a Gxxxk only? Thanks. I can shoot a Gxxxk (and well). What you gonna do with my Para Ordnance Carry 12 (what da)...... Or, how'd he un-•••• that loaded hammerless coach gun? #3 rule: PRACTICE. Be hard on yourself. Michelle and I were at the range last weekend. I have 3" reactive stick-on targets I use. She was mad at herself because so many of her shots were "outside" the stickers at 10 yards. I had her shoot a torso target at the same distance. She felt much better. I reminder her "the 8 ring is YUGE compared to my stickers; I practice on them because I want to keep as focused as possible, for public carry". I had a couple flyers (3" hellcat, 124gr JHP, 10 yards, mag-dump speeds) but overall still within a 5" circle. Plenty accurate for a bad-guy-center-mass shot if needed. Using the laser keeps my rhythm on track, and I put the whole mag in the sticker, no problem. | ||
