Tesla has these huge castings where most cars have a pile of folded sheet metal and thousands of fasteners. Reminded me of North American who made F-100 wings basically from a slab of aluminum milled for many hours to shape and hollow spaces. Eliminated thousands of fasteners and failure points. I watched a not-from-Tesla video on the new battery format. They had big Tesla parts all over the shop/studio. The hypothisized New battery pack cools the cells from one end, and takes power from the other. A rectangular-ish frame packed with cells and epoxy?? Filling the voids, so the battery pack is structural. The Big castings to hold suspension and motors at each end, have to be strong. The rails between front & back only have to be strong enough to keep things stiff enough to lift, and the battery pack, once installed, is the main load path. Maybe. Like I said, not official and a lot of speculation. In aviation, they have many sayings.. Like... "You can have it light, or easy to make, or cheap. Pick one." One of the cleverest planes I've seen is the Cri-Cri. Designed by Michel Colomban, it is incredibly light, and other than the canopy and a few "plastic" bits like tail tips, ( just for streamlining ) and foam ribs, it's entirely sheet metal. Really thin sheet metal. Lots and lots of parts. No, more than that. The wing spar is riveted sheets in layers and shapes to take the stress and distribute it. Very complex. I've seen pictures from an Aussie building one. An incredible number of small thin parts that eventually will fly. Seriously, looks like the scrap bin at a ducting manufacturing plant, all these hand sized odd shaped slivers of aluminum you can bend with your fingers, before assembly. Very light. But you can build it in your garage with only a few specialty tools like a metal brake, it just takes a LOT of time, and dedicated attention to detail. Every part must be free from burrs, or cracks, or imperfections you can catch a fingernail on. Once completed, it's fully aerobatic and cruises at over 120mph, depending on engines. It will safely do loops where the pilot feels six+ times his weight. It will support over half a ton of accelerated pilot. You can pick it up. Extraordinary. Attempts to build as strong and light in carbon fiber run into the problem that you could crush the wings if you grabbed it. | ||

See also the movie Armor Of God with Jackie Chan. For movie triva fans... The rolling fire pot scene was "stolen" for Indiana Jones and The Temple of Doom. The increasing use of "smart thermostats" that allow the Utility companies to turn your AC & heat up & down to ease load peaks, is currently sold as a way to get a discount on power. Several politicians want them mandatory. The connected controls also allow for the Utility companies to turn the heat/cooling off/up/down selectively. It's pure speculation that Evil People would use political goals to select who gets AC/heat. Punish the Republicans? How could you tell? Visit your Democrat neighbor and find their home cool while your's is sweltering? ( Or they are warm while you freeze ) Sounds unlikely, but so does the President deliberately raising the price of energy to force you to modify your life, which is happening now. Or how about selectively killing the power in inner cities to promote riots ahead of an election, while blaming the Heretical Denier Enemy? That doesn't need smart thermostats or any new stuff at all, just evil intent and power. ( my guess is the Klan Party doesn't want life to get More Worse before the Midterms, if they are smart, but that's a Big If. ) When, not if, the power goes out this summer, it's the result of deliberate policy action by the White House and Watermelons. Watch for bus loads of paid protesters! | ||

Ditto airliners. But the bulk of commercial air travel is in mostly empty space. The Traffic control systems have them bunched up in highways in The sky, but it's still far more open than a typical interstate. Autopilot integration into collision avoidance is fairly new, but planes flying on Autopilot also tend to follow steady predictable courses. That's why gliders are kept separate. They turn unpredictably and often as they seek lift. I like my "radar cruise". It's very limited, but I don't expect more. I'm driving a lot in expressway traffic, and the operative word is "driving". Roads, with high speed children and critters is a far more difficult challenge to robots! The FAA hasn't adapted to robotic flight, yet, but it's not crazy to expect limited robot air taxis with very limited flight paths this century. That hardware/software stuff already works pretty good. ( although I expect rough aka Firm, landings to be a common complaint. ) Even the most advanced car system needs an alert driver to take over for when it gets confused. The use of cell phones is a huge safety issue. It's going to lead to new Horror Stories. "And in the wreckage, the stereo kept playing Stairway To Heaven on repeat!" I remember it was invented by Crichton, a great writer, but always forget the name he used.  So I have to search Michael Crichton Syndrome or something like that & get a different editorial each time. I've read all his novels, & seen the movie versions. I understand there's a Director's cut of 13th Warrior ( novel title Eaters Of The Dead, you can see why they changed it ) with a very different take on the story. Crichton had final cut rights, and what hit theaters is "his" version, & I liked it. But in a vault in Hollywood is a different story. I'd like to see it, but no one has. 13th Warrior is a great flick. There's utterly Wrong armor for the time and the bit where Banderas grinds down a sword is soooo wrong, both because it would wreck a forged sword, and because a Viking sword is actually very light and handy, & shouldn't be a problem for a shrimp like Banderas was playing, and is in real life. That's my only complaints, really. I don't think they got across that it was a colony of Neanderthal remnants, either, but in the movie's context, you don't care. The cultural parts, a Muslim from Constantinople in the Northlands, are well done and really rare in film. The casting of real Scandahoovians, and even Antonio as an Arab/Turk was perfect. And so many great scenes. Mocking his Arabian horse, learning the language, the prayer before battle, and "it's made from honey!" come to mind... But imho, the funniest moment is early in the movie, the Caravan is desperately trying to escape & Omar Sharif is explaining they are being chased by the most Bad A$$ Unstoppable Killers and are totally screwed, when the bad guys turn and run away. And a longboat with a 13 year old boy standing on the bow comes around the curve of the river. The Perfect example of The Worf Effect. ( see tv tropes ) | ||
