Picked up an EZ Pass in preparation for the upcoming South East Iron Butt Tour. Mounted the EZ-Pass inside the cowling tonight, tough to find a flat spot to keep the correct orientation, so I ended up mounting it vertically. Basically, it's 90 degrees of where it should be. I got the idea to mount it inside the cowling from a website and it worked for him (links below). I think as long as you don't have metallic paint, or other metals in front of it.. it can be read through the plastic cowling just fine. Will do a quick ride over to check though sometime this weekend and will report back. Here is a pic of where I mounted it, it does not interfere with anything inside of the cowling. I also removed the felt pad on the cowling that was pressing against the horn, and also adjusted the screw on the horn that is under a grommet with gasket maker covering it, under there is a phillips head screw which you can adjust - my horn is very loud now, as it should be. Not sure if the felt is factory applied, but I think it might be.

Just register it to your license plate. The cameras will get the plate and your account will be debited, no transmitter needed. |

The EZ-Pass did work through the cowling. Note, only use the standard mount points for tape/velcro. I initially covered the whole thing and it wasn't recognized at the toll station. Once I adjusted to the standard left & right mount points, it worked just fine. Also, I added some foam w/ adhesive back to where the felt was on the cowling. I got some chattering initially without the felt, and pretty sure that is where it originated from, so added some back. Good to go now. (Message edited by cletusberontwood on June 02, 2022) |

Thanks Ratbuell, I have heard of that working too... But at the toll I went through last night, it had an barrier and I was in the EZ-Pass only lane. When it didn't register, I had to wait for an attendant to walk over and complete the transaction with a credit card. I told him I had an EZ Pass under the cowling. |

Ah, all the lanes we have around here are "express", with readers that pick up at speed... |

Had that happen to me a couple of times. I put the ezpass in my tank bag and can pull it out to show an attendant when necessary. Orientation is important though. |

Well, so the EZ-Pass didn't work the next time I went through. I had went from a double sided tape to the velcro, so maybe the slight additional distance caused it not to work.. or maybe the toll booth was having trouble. Not sure. I pulled it back out of the cowling and put it in my tank bag. Griffmeister, agreed - I think having the EZ Pass accessible is key. I'm going to figure out somewhere to place it, as I don't typically have my tank bag on. |

Helmet? (only half-joking...) Or, if you have armor in your riding jacket, maybe an armor pocket in the shoulder? |

With Illinois, I don't use a transponder. I just registered with "Pay By Plate". |
