"Save the planet" has multiple possible meanings. In rough order of accuracy... there may be a time where we use all the fusion bombs to deflect a Titan sized asteroid swinging in from the Oort cloud, that would otherwise turn the Earth into a glowing ball of molten rock. That qualifies as "Save the planet" by most sane definitions. We might launch millions of square miles of mirrors into orbit to stop an Ice Age from killing 90% of human life. That qualifies in a "for humanity!" way, but interferes in the Natural Order of things, perhaps . Ditto, Stanislav Petrov & Vasili Arkhipov should get credit for not following orders and stopping "WW3" or the Cold War going nuclear. The % saved is arguable, but since it includes me, "good job!" . Alternatively, a full blitz nuclear war with deliberately built "doomsday bombs" ( see Dr. Strangelove ) would "save the planet" for cockroaches. Sucks to be a human, though. More practically, for a certain ideological bent, "we lied for Years about Climate and now my family is in the Permanent Overclass, that rules the world" qualifies in a twisted, selfish, and dishonest way. That last one is the current situation. | ||
