Once upon a time, New York State passed the "Rockefeller Drug Law", cracking down on the wave of drug related crimes, by making sentences exceptionally harsh. Sounds sensible, you want to discourage behaviour, you make punishment big. At the time, I was in a law class, and we had the new law as passed to review. This is "advanced placement" high school kids, mind you. We quickly noticed that murder was less harshly punished than possession of heroin. Our prediction was, given a choice between hard time, and shooting it out with the arresting officer, many criminals would make the logical choice. It's less jail time for murder, and if you murder the arresting officer, you might get away with no jail at all. THUS the new law would get cops killed. We even sent this prediction to the Governor and Legislature. Never heard back. The next year there was a 200% increase in murdered police. Why spin this tale of ancient times and long dead politicians and law enforcement? Because when punishment is radically disproportionate, it gets kick back. And I'll point out that the 2 What's your reaction to... Better yet, what's the guy down the street's reaction to 24/7 yelling that... Oh, to just pick 2, " The Republicans want to bring back segregation and Jim Crow " & "Your neighbor with the gasoline powered motorcycle wants you to die in a natural disaster" .
