Hi guys, I've just changed the primary oil on my 98 M2 and have now noticed an oil leak from the bottom of the case where the shifter attaches. Looking at stock photos it looks like this is an aftermarket shifter that wouldn't normally attach here. Does anyone know if there's a damaged seal that would be causing the leak? Cheers SD

the only seal there is the primary gasket. Old and like to leak. Did you borescope the shoe when the oil was out? putin on the ritz https://www.amazon.com/dp/B0928Q3T42/?coliid=I3SEK WYHBOXZCQ&colid=1DBDSW2DB775&ref_=lv_ov_lig_dp_it& th=1 |

Thanks, Victory, no I didn't but I might have to have a look at it now. I did notice that that bolt was slightly bent so it could be the threads causing the seepage. |

1) That shifter is the factory replacement for earlier tubers. Used as stock around 2000 and later. 2) I hope the case threads are good. Sounds like a case of too much or too little torque on that bolt. Try reassembling with a little silicone gasket sealer behind the spacer and a new bolt. FYI: Can reverse the shift, (down to shift up gears, like race bikes), by just pulling the top arm, rotating by about 160 degrees, and remounting. |

Thanks 89rs1200 for the info about that part. The model I have is a 98 so it looks like that has been replaced with the new ones. I'll try and track down a new bolt and see how that goes. |

89rs, You were close. The shifter here replaced the boomerang type in 2001. My 2000 M2 had the old rang style. The new one was MUCH better. I had the same oil drip problem on my M2, the permanent fix is a new gasket. Short term I pulled the bolt, cleaned it with carb cleaner, same for the threaded part in the case. I used a smallish bore brush to get any oil spooge out. I then used Hylomar but any good sealant will work. You don't want to use anything permanent as you will have to clean it out when you do get around to changing the primary cover gasket. If the primary has never been off, it's the old style paper type. Uggh! You also have the old style primary chain adjuster with the thin pressure plate. How many miles on the M2? Brad |

Hey Brad, I've called around some local dealers where I am and there's none of these in stock at the moment. I've put around 15,000km on it and it has around 70,000km which is around 43k miles so far. I haven't pulled the primary cover gasket as yet and I'm not sure when the last time that happened but if it means sorting out this leak then I might bite the bullet. Do you have any recommendations for a gasket type, just replace it with the original paper style? Thanks Ben (Message edited by Super_dooper on April 04, 2022) |

Hylomar is great. Also used around the gas filler. The gasket you want is soft metal covered by rubber like compound. Should not be hard to find. Genuine James or Cometic. As you likely know, ask for same year Sportster. Easier for the parts person to find a Harley-Davidson part than Buell part number. |

Shoes are whipped at 30000. Clutch and engine sprocket shaft seal too. |

Ah right, yes the original blue Hylomar. Hylomar was recently purchased and now there is a range of products. |

Check your clutch cable. If its not coated style you need a new coated one. Clutch lever effort is greatly reduced. |

Fix for a leaking clutch cable is a piece of crimping hose with glue on the inside over the area were it goes into the metal threaded piece. |

Thanks guys for the tips! Just picked up a James gasket kit and an adjuster shoe and some Hylomar for good measure. |
