What's wrong with your Buell? I get 50+ mpg with normal riding @ 60 mph.

And, assuming 30 mph for the electric & 135 for the Buell that's more than 4 times as fast.

What size battery & motor? ( I've been shopping for kits )

She won't anyway. Programming. Bad math Offends Me. You can only guess how I respond to Just Joe*.

I suppose a better tactic would be an E-bike thread where I mock her femininity or whatever for choosing poorly in all aspects of life, including the E bike?

If it's a serious tuning problem, then helping the bike achieve it's low polluting potential is a plus for all mankind, and the positive impact of an actual accomplishment might change their life forever!

Or it's a badly programmed A. Not so I. & I'm sorry I wasted our time. : )

I agree that perfect security for a connected computer/device is a myth. You can certainly do better than Microsoft, but that's damning with faint praise.

But while I think much is hype, there's no doubt that some concerns are real.

Is every Chinese chip a security disaster? Probably not. But then you can't trust ANY if only some or most are built with backdoors open to the most murderous and dishonest regime in human history.

Here's some paranoia fuel for you.

I'm pecking this out on a Kindle Fire.

So every word goes to Amazon. That's not owned by a benign patriot. His servers? How open to Chinese Secret Police? I just assume every word goes through their computers, so I'm already flagged for execution for mocking Pooh the God King. I'm not worried, it'll take Months before President Harris* orders my arrest when Xi tells her to. I'm way down that list. ( sarcasm, unpleasant truth )

And every page here I open also goes past the same algorithms to search for intelligence. So both that great BBQ place and that picture of your family is in their machines. So what?

If Amazon's Silk browser ( how appropriate ) is run through insecure servers, then Google's Chrome is too. And Facebook and... And...

That means the Chinese version of the KGB, as well as the NSA, knows all about every word you've ever typed online, every website you've looked at.

No human has to judge you, the A.I. does.

So... You watch Timcast, shopped for a bump stock, your nephew, your credit cards, the Karen down the street.... You ARE on a list somewhere that has a code for your political reliability and fate when Facebook rules the Earth. ( regret those lizard man memes yet? ) Or Emperor Xi. Or Vladimir's clone... Doesn't matter.

If Canadians and Americans can be hounded and their bank accounts shut down at the Whim of a single Dictator, and they can and HAVE, then we're already most of the way to the worst science fiction hells.

We live in a dystopian world where your nephew can get suspended from school for posting about going shooting with his cool biker uncle.

Cyberpunk is old news now.

I've bought 3 cars this year and the most impressive is the Food F-250 SD. I'd never had the diesel in it before and the diesel has an incredible amount of power.

It's expensive to run . . but, my fuel is paid by the company so it basically goes on the electric bill.

I suppose that's the reason that so many of the electric bills tripled last month. Folks wanted "green" energy and authorized to build all this wind and solar and "just add it to the bill" . . . bill for a 1,700 SF house was $830.32 last month.

And NY is talking about requiring all stoves to be total electric.

Good.

:-)

I pay 10.8 cents per kwh fixed for a 100% renewable power plan. I didn’t intend to go with 100% renewable, but it was the cheapest plan I could find. Texas deregulated the electricity market. There are dozens of companies to choose from. Competition is good. Let me guess. NY’s electricity provider is a state regulated utility?

EVERYTHING in New York is a State Regulated O!igarchy.

My electric provider buys juice and marks it up to retail, plus charges a delivery fee.

I can change providers and the only thing that physically changes is the print on my bill. ( the paper too, possibly )

https://www.theatlantic.com/technology/archive/202 2/03/gas-prices-high-drive-slow/627039/

The first part makes sense. Heck, cars I have owned with mileage readouts confirm actual Experiments I personally did for school back in the late 1970s. & repeated on my 1983 van.

You might remember the idea of filling up and writing down the numbers in the dim ages before GPS and computers in the dash. I did THAT.

Depending on gearing, most cars get peak mileage in the 40-55 zone. Power required to overcome aerodynamic drag goes up by the cube of speed.

https://www.fxsolver.com/browse/formulas/Power+%28 aerodynamic+drag%29

For example, my current gen Caravan shifts to high gear & locks up the torque converter @ 40. ( in eco mode ) That's under partial throttle, not while floored. The 3.6 is pretty torquey so it will maintain 40 @ about 1100 rpm. Thus The MINIMUM speed to get best mileage is at least 40. On flat level ground.

But in practice, it can't go uphill ( increased load ) past a certain slope without down shifting. So for my terrain, rolling hills, I'm better off @ 45-50 to stay in high gear.

If you were rolling downhill from Vegas to Barstow, (infamous graveyard of cars with marginal cooling systems, on the uphill run, from Barstow to Vegas ) then you might get your car to run under 1000 rpm and get phenomenal mileage at silly low speeds. You might die from being rear ended, though. So, don't.

My 1983 Dodge van had a lockup converter that engaged @ 45. That was the minimum speed for best mileage.

I know it's unusual for a mileage improvement rant to harp on about the MINIMUM speed, instead of preaching about slowing down.

That's because I assume that you aren't an idiot and @#$%ing Of Course driving faster, using more power, burns more gas or battery.

And CUBE!!!!! If you're a math illiterate, that means a rising, steeper curve getting worse and worse....

But just creeping around town in a normal gasoline or diesel vehicle, doesn't really get the best mileage. You want to be in top gear at a relatively low RPM with some good vacuum/manifold pressure. Under load, but not burning much since the slightly larger gulps of fuel are more than offset by fewer gulps per time. ( see the torque/hp equations/curves where power increases with RPM since you burn more fuel per minute. More fuel = more power. )

Driving for peak economy thus has a minimum speed, basically the speed your vehicle is happy to cruise in top gear. That depends on gearing, terrain, etc.

That's something most "hypermileing" advice gets wonky. You are better off getting up to speed so you can run top gear fairly quickly, to minimize the time and distance in lower gears. But not floored. The math is iterative, Darn it. But a rough rule of thumb is under 30 seconds to cruise speed.

Then unless you're a rude jerk, you have to consider traffic. If I'm on a 4 lane road, I'll cruise the speed limit if I'm going for mileage. In the slow lane. Unless it's dangerous. Based on how fast maniacs are likely to punt me from behind.

Or in other words, driving through West Virginia hills in a 70 zone, I keep up with traffic to keep everyone alive.

According to a 2013 study by Oak Ridge National Laboratory, which evaluated for speed and efficiency 74 vehicles as disparate as diesel Volkswagens, hybrid Ford Fusions, and the gas-powered Mercury Grand Marquis, a typical U.S.-made car achieves maximum fuel efficiency at a steady speed of 40 to 50 mph. After that, explains John Thomas, the now-retired lead investigator on the study, “the rule of thumb is that you lose about 15 percent gas mileage for every 10 miles per hour you accelerate.” On the open road, where drivers maintain steady speeds of 50 to 80 mph, reducing speed by 10 mph can save 75 cents a gallon on a five-dollar gallon of gas—or 90 cents a gallon on a six-dollar gallon of gas, already the price where I live, in the San Fernando Valley area of Los Angeles.

Bad math? Or bad journalism?

You don't save ANY cents per gallon if you get better mileage. You save cents per Mile.

More on speed...

The Lotus Europa, a slick, small engined sports car that is belt buckle tall, gets best mileage @ 70 mph with stock gearing.

My VW Sportwagen diesel got 40 mpg @ 70 mph, and better in a curve down to the minimum of about 45mph. Iirc peak was about 50-55. Aerodynamic body good.

My current Rav-4 hybrid gets 35+mpg @ 70. More brick like. 45mpg @ 55.

And my Cyclone, Buttercup, w/Thunderbolt S3 fairing, gets around 55mpg @ 60ish in the twisty hill country.

YMMV. ; )

My Fusion hybrid got better mileage around town than on the highway.
Road surface also has something to do with it since I can see the mileage on any of my vehicles dropping while steady state cruising on Iowa Hwy 20.
My RF900R got 70mpg twice while able to average 90mph. Torque peak I assume.

Regarding minimum speed, it has been said that an idling car gets the same MPG as a dumpster fire. ; )

Hybrids usually are best in town, at slower stop & go speeds that let it take advantage of the battery for much of the initial acceleration etc. Some of that is physics, some programming.

Dumpster fire!

The original Chrysler turbine car got about the same mpg at highway speed as a 318 V-8. And the same fuel consumption at idle as a 318 @ highway speeds.

https://foreignpolicy.com/2022/03/05/sri-lanka-org anic-farming-crisis/

If we demand the world transition to medieval farming practices, then the Greenies get free population control, as the wars and famine will reduce the impact of living humans. Big win for buzzards and rats, too.

There is the minor problem of massive pollution as the burning cities and collapsing water/sewage systems poison the water, land, and air. But that won't affect John Kerry on his yacht for a while.

https://wattsupwiththat.com/2022/03/18/the-climate -change-spiral-is-back/

Wake me up when it Finally gets to the good temperature times of Jesus of Nazareth and the Viking age of exploration.

That's about 2000 & 1000 years ago for the illiterate. Both warmer than today.

There are other happy warm times in history, and the unhappy cold times between.

The happy warm times are characterized by common things, even a thousand years apart.

Increased crop yields leading to increased population. ( yep, cause & effect! )

Increased wealth in societies that allowed the development of a leisure class, middle class, & the sponsorship of art and technology. New items to trade, New farming methods to feed the hungry. Massive increases in the trading range of societies.

The Viking Knorr boats, ( the sauce/noodle company is named after them ) are wonders of centuries of boat building experience in nasty waters. Arguably the best row boats with sails made from wool blankets ever. Trans- Atlantic voyages are still made by replicas & history enthusiast crews.

https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Knarr

Which somewhat masks the fact that the Best rowboat with wool blanket sails, is still a big rowboat with a sail. And that the voyages that colonized Iceland, Greenland, and Vinland ( vine land, where grapes to make wine grew! Aka Eastern Canada & U.S. ) were possible Because the warm times had less severe weather so brave lunatics could cross oceans in open rowboats.

It was the good warm times that fed the people and made trade easier.

With the Bad Cold times in between, where plagues ravaged the land, starvation and chronic malnutrition. Empires fell. Dark ages. Brutal, nasty, cold times.

We live in a unique period in history. The Renaissance ( warm times after cold Dark Age ) led to a technology explosion in ( mostly ) Europe and it's colonies. ( which finally caught up to the Asian/Indian Civilization's technologies ) Once these things were widespread, among a written record society, ( thank you, monks ) they stayed in use, at least in the richer communities during the Bad Cold times. See Venice.

Progress somewhat softened the climate change issues in the last few centuries. Life got Better!

Except where intolerant religious fanatics forced regression to more primitive lifestyles. See Islam and Greenies. Inevitably such regressions lead to a tiny autocratic elite and the oppression of hard pressed masses.

See the fact that in North Africa and the Middle East, up through what is now Turkey, the common theme of nostalgia for the Glory Days of The Ancestors... ( Before the Cult wrecked everything )

I'm hoping that my era won't be the near mythological nostalgia times for future generations. That tales of exploring the heavens with the space age equivalent of row boats are not just fantastic and disbelieved myths like water that ran hot and cold at whim from the walls themselves!

Instead of gathering feces to be dried and burned to heat water for the wealthy. ( see the San Angeles Cult Lands )
