What size time sert (or helicoil) should I get for a stripped primary drain hole? I'd like to keep the original bolt. can't find it searching this forum, so maybe someone can help thanks | ||

Heres what I would do... Twin Motorcycles and even Harley Davidson have parts diagrams on their web pages available for public use. Look up the part # on the web page and just do a google search for the part # and it will show the size. The part has been in the Harley lineup since about 1965, so I'm sure more than one person has documented the size. Actually I'm positive of it, as I did look the part up from an online parts catalog and googled the part number, to which it gave me the size of the bolt, and in turn the helicoil/threadsert size to use. Or if you dont have access to the internet, you could take the drain plug down to a hardware or auto parts store and they should be able to get the size, and possibly recommend a helicoil or threadsert kit to use. | ||

I’m a big fan of timeserts for repairing threads. If you reach out to them with the bolt size they will tell you what you need, including the depth to buy if it’s a blind hole (with a bottom) never really been a fan of heli-coil, lots of guys like them but I “feel” like they are not as permanent as a timesert. I’ve fixed some heavy duty load applications with a timesert and never been disappointed. Some of the bikes I’ve resurrected have been botched in a few places. The trick with the timesert is that it’s depth specific, you need the right length/depth combo for the last few threads to cut into the material. Good luck! | ||

Update - Time-Sert 1/2 - 20 Drain Plug Repair Kit was the correct kit and still be able to use the standard Buell primary drain bolt. I was able to complete the job with the bike on a set of front and rear stands (pit bull in my case). They provided enough clearance to use my dewalt cordless drill. I did remove the primary case so that I could flush out any metal filings. Thanks all for the insight. | ||

These kinds of repairs really make me miss having a supermoto. If I needed to fix something where you might have a hard time getting a tool in a hard place, I would've just laid the bike on it's side on the ground and got to work. No stands needed haha. | ||

I thought about doing that but was concerned about metal shavings getting into the clutch or tranny. | ||

Definitely. A good strong magnet on the inside of the hole(if you have access to it) is a big help with catching stray chips. | ||

Personally, I'm a fan of plugging the primary drain plug in the cases, and putting a drain plug in the primary cover, like on the XBs. | ||

It'd be wonderful if that drain plug was somewhere easily accessible without having to drop the exhaust. Do you have any pictures? | ||

With a reasonable bore scope you will prob. see nothing much to worry about on the magnet and just pump it out. |
