Hey Guys, I've noticed that the front end of my bike will vibrate (shake or shimmy, if you will) under light application of the front brakes at low speeds. It tends to vibrate with increasing intensity as the bike slows down, say, at speeds of 10mph or less. Braking harder tends to lessen the vibration, but doesn't remove it completely, especially at very low speeds. I detect no vibration at speeds over 15-20mph. Have any of you experienced this? Do you have any suggestions on how I might remedy the problem if it is a problem at all? thanks, Ryon |

I replaced my front brake pads at about 10K and noticed the front end shook much less. From my experience, front tire cupping is probably the culprit. |

Yeah, I would agree with front tire cupping. |

After about 800 miles the front started to shimmy, and shake. I road it for another month or so. Made my appt. with H-D. They said I was braking hard, need brakes. Got the bike out of the shop it still shimmy'd and shaked. I made another appointment byt he time I got it in the shop, my tire was worn below specks and they wouldn't even test ride it in the parking lot, the front end hopped. Another brake job that I paid for, of course. I got it out of the shop same thing. I put a new tire on it so they could test ride it and I put it in the shop and I asked them to check the rotor to see if it was warped and when I got it out of the shop they said it was fine.... that they checked it and it was within specs. I ordered a rotor put it on myself, paid for it even though it should have been warrantied and it solved the problem. I also use after market brake pads, there are several to choose from EBC's are what I have on it now. When I brake it's smooth as glass. Hope you have better luck with your tech's. I figured that I paid for 3 brake jobs and 1 rotor, which should have been under warranty. I now found a new tech we call 'The Sweed' and he's the only one who touches my bike besides me. |

Just went through the same exact thing. When I changed my front tire out it went away a little. Then I went and had my 5k service and told the tech what I was feeling. They inspected the rotor for glazing (there wasn't any), and re-torqued the headset. Problem solved. I would think if your rotor looks good, your tire is not cupped, then it's your head set. A minor adjustment but great results. My front end is shimmy-less! |

My bike does the same thing, (03 XB9S) but I agree with Tuscon, it feels like something is loose in the front end and the breaking causes it to shimmy. Tuscon- what exactly did they re-torque, and could you have done it yourself? |

I'm so mechanically inept I'd hate to tell ya the wrong thing. I'm pretty sure the head set is adjusted with the hex nut that's on top of the triple clamp...but like I said, don't quote me on that! |

I've got the same problem. Feels like the front forks are moving forward and back when braking. Mash on the brakes and no shimmy. Sounds like head bearing torque out of tolerance to me. I've got some time after work today and will attempt to re-torque the head bearing. I'll let you know the results. |

Hey there, the 9s I used to have had the same problem. The dealer re-torqued the pinch bolts in the front of the steering head and also the big hex bolt. The problem went away. I have 18k plus miles on my 12r and it is starting to do the same. |

I get clicks too, but they are very faint and very fast. They are a produced by the pads moving over the holes in the rotor, not a problem at all. If your clicks are coming from that, I wouldn't worry about it at all, but if it's something else I'd keep looking into it. |

Just had the same prob. It was the steering head being loose. Jack it up, loosen the bottom triple clamp pinch bolts, loosen the steering stem pinch, and torque the cap bolt up way good (54Nm). Then retorque all the pinch bolts and go for a ride. Mine kept coming loose so I gave it a little loctite and that fixed it good. I found if I did it quick and nasty without loosening the bottom pinch bolts it would not tightne properly. |

well, if you didn't loosen the bottom pinch bolts, you'd just be trying to flex the triples by tightening the steering head bolt, as the fork tubes had nowhere to go ... not surprising it didn't work Henrik |

Hey Yeahcmon, I was wondering if you had a chance to fiddle with your bike yet? If so, did the fixes help the problem? |
