I've had horrible luck with tail lights on this bike. I think it just shakes them all to pieces, eventually the contacts wear out and they just quit working. My original light I had rebuilt a few times, but I think the little tangs that pressed up against the bulb just lost their spring. I bought another light on ebay but it wasn't too long before it was the same, and I'd be riding around with no tail/brake light. I eventually switched to an LED light, which avoids all of those issues, but of course it wasn't that bright and some of the lights quit working. I supplemented the tail light with some LED turn signals that also had a brake light function, so that was a nice back up, until Friday when I noticed that the bike had shaken that one to death too, and any time I pressed the brake it would start flashing the turn signal. I disconnected the brake light feature, but then I'm back to just a halfassed tail light. Figured it was time to just pull out the Ulysses light I bought a while back. I planned on finding a way to do this nicely, but I had exactly one nap time to figure it out and get it back together if I wanted it back together for my Monday commute, so please disregard the crappy craftsmanship, it'll get cleaned up better someday. Comparison of the lights, my cheap ebay led version of the stock light, vs the similarly sized Uly light:
Unfortunately the mounting bolts don't line up perfectly, so some holes needed redrilled.

Here's some comparison pictures of the 2. The normal cheap tail light was sufficient, but the brake light really didn't light up that bright. Alternatively the Uly tail light is pretty dim, but the brake light is super bright. It looked ok in my garage, and looked fine when it was overcast as I left for work this morning, but when I rolled it out in the driveway yesterday afternoon when it was actually sunny, you could barely even see the normal tail light lit up. Not too worried about it, since I think chances of getting rear ended when I'm not slowing down or already stopped are pretty slim, and if I had to pick I definitely prefer the brighter brake light. Anyway, just wanted to put this out there as a potential option for some people. I'm hoping this one holds up a bit better than the cheap Chinese one I had on there. (Message edited by upthemaiden on August 02, 2021) |

If anybody else is interested in this upgrade I’m selling my Ulysses tail light for $30. |

Heres a link I saved in my notes. No experience with these but may get to it. https://www.superbrightleds.com/vehicle/2001-buell -x1-lightning-vehicle-led-lights?make=89&model=358 5&year=2001 Personally I have had great luck with my bulbs. Maybe changed the rear bulb twice? Headlight has never failed. I think one of the signals failed once? (Message edited by victory on August 07, 2021) |
