An old post discussed performing a TPS (Throttle Position Sensor) reset. There were 2 methods presented in the post. Which TPS reset procedure below is correct? First method states to roll the throttle to WOT, hold, and roll back to closed – repeat this part three times. Then turn the ignition/key off. Second method states to roll the throttle to WOT, hold, and back to closed, and then turn key ignition/key off. Then to repeat this step two more times (roll to WOT and back to closed and turn ignition/key off). Which is correct? Thanks. (WOT stands for Wide Open Throttle) | ||

This information is taken from: Buell 1125r Model 2008 Service Manual, print date 06/08. Chapter 4, Page 4-9 Throttle Position Sensor Manual Calibration 1.) Verify throttle cable position. 2.)Turn the ignition switch to on. 3.) For three cycles: Pause one second on each throttle stop (fully open, completely closed). Make sure there is zero binding of the throttle cables by turning the handlebars all the way in both directions. If any adjustment is necessary, adjust for zero slack at the right hand grip. For DDFI3 and DVCS only (2008 and later Buell and all EBR products): 1. Begin with the ignition key off, run/stop switch in “Run” position, and throttle closed. 2. Turn the ignition key on; do not start the motorcycle. 3. After at least one second, hold the throttle fully open for one second. 4. Release the throttle and allow it to snap closed. 5. After at least one second, hold the throttle fully open for one second. 6. Release the throttle and allow it to snap closed. 7. After at least one second, hold the throttle fully open for one second. 8. Release the throttle and allow it to snap closed. This completes the TPS zero process. At this point, you can turn off the ignition or start the motorcycle. | ||

Dean Adams and Two_seasons, Thanks you very much for the information on the TPS reset. The TPS reset procedure in the 2009 Service Manual is poorly written (Buell 1125 Models, 2009 Service Manual, print date 08/08). Chapter 4, Page 4-10 Throttle Position Sensor, Manual Calibration. If one follows the steps verbatim in the 2009 Service Manual, one is to turn the ignition key on and off after each roll of the throttle. One would end up turning the key on three times and off three times. (I am not going to list the 2009 Service Manual “Step 2a/b/c/d” here as it is likely written incorrectly.) This is probably redundant, but it is still worth mentioning. Be sure the throttle cable is fully opening the throttle and allowing the throttle to close by physically watching the throttle plates in the throttle bodies before resetting the TPS. |
