It's occasionally worth restating that anyone with half a brain cares about the Environment. Just because I'm past skeptical about the Climate Con doesn't mean I want the oceans covered in oil and the air to be like a Chinese smog, or '70s LA smog miasma.

Unfortunately the lying sacks of Power Hungry Evil ( leftists ) exploit the good sense of normal people who don't want Industrial Age pollution, so we've had decades of money and political effort wasted on greedy thieves like Solyndra ( and Barry, who took big bribes to give the CEO your tax dollars, who is now Chief of staff at TMSC AZ ( Taiwan semiconductor manufacturing co. https://www.cnbc.com/2020/05/15/tsmc-to-build-us-c hip-factory.html

https://www.foxnews.com/politics/remember-solyndra -loss-of-taxpayer-millions-seems-forgotten-expert- says

This fits with my oft repeated claim that Bribing Obama was for at least six years the Best Investment in Wall Street. See also the Canadian company that made the Obama care website, run by the husband of Michelle's college bff, ( but only after a cash contribution of a half million. Which seems to be the minimum Barry Bribe during his regime ) and got a Billion from you to create a web site you could have ordered from a bunch of competent companies for the price of a loaded touring motorcycle.

So the Trillion dollars destined to go into the offshore bank accounts of really rich people selling windmills and solar farms isn't ever going to be spent to clean plastic from oceans or reduce air pollution.

Deja vu again! The Democrat Occupiers of the White House support slavery. Black Africans, naturally.

Of course, history doesn't exactly repeat, it used to be cotton, now it's batteries.

Other than that, let's see... Rich Democrats profit, check. Racism is endemic & systematic in the Klan Party, check. They Blame Jews, check. Promote race hate to keep power, check.

It's worse than the 1800s, though, because then at least Northern papers and universities spoke out against racist slavery, those days are long gone.

Pre-industrial soot.

Experience with historical re-creation shows us that most movies get it wrong. Life in Europe after the Fall of Rome was nasty, filthy, short, and brutal, so a darn good model for the Green New Deal when technology is lost. If all you watched were Royal Romances you missed a lot.

Heavier cheaper and less precious resources. Might be a good choice for home battery packs and load leveling / grid storage.

Lithium polymer/LiFeion/etc. Light batteries with high power density are needed for vehicles, until the Next Big Thing. But it's insane, or at least sinfully wasteful to use such where weight isn't a prime requirement.

I'll ignore the horrific pollution & damage to the environment that electric stuff requires to work, just like the Greenies do.

Prius used to use NiCad. Before that, Lead Acid, and over a century ago, Iron Acid, ( which, typically, you could refurbish in a garage )

I constantly see the meme... Old car manuals told you how to adjust the valves. New car manuals tell you not to drink battery acid.

On a personal note, I'm second car shopping.

My '13 Caravan has over 205k miles and rust is ongoing. I previously had a happy 2 car ( and one bike ) arrangement with a high MPG daily driver and a conversion van for cargo, camping, and hauling flying machines.

A Prius doesn't have the room for my stuff, ( although the V was pretty good ) and they're at a premium. VW has a camless engine due next year, they're training mechanics now, but I'm not excited about another German car with mice loving, auto rotting, wiring insulation. And high repair costs. ( biodegradable means it's deteriorating on the showroom floor )

I'm considering a mini SUV for winter bashing, and tagged along with my sister who is shopping for a "5000 pounds tow capacity SUV with ample cargo space, since she & hubby pack heavy". Like multiple X box and CPAP and body pillow and... Bigger than I need, but as long as they're shopping.

So... The Honda CRV. Not bad, until I got to the evil letters "CVT" on the sticker. Walked out back where the lot boys were moving cars. Winced. Snowmobile transmissions with shrapnel chains instead of belts. I admit computer control improved them a lot but it's a numb, droning, thing. Salesmen says only the Pilot, Ridgeline, and R have automatic transmission with gears. Humph.

Toyota RAV4? not bad, decent mileage, and the hybrid has a really low extra cost, 1-2 k$ and the current generation actually gets 6mpg more instead of 2. But... " ecvt"?? Dang.

But although I'm a Luddite, I do research my prejudices, so wtf is an "ecvt"?

It's not a snowmobile pulley thing. At all.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=MsvVD0FaF28

Here's the train mechanics demonstrator ad.

This is clever. So I test drove one. No Corvette, certainly, but more than adequate acceleration and seamless power delivery. Lane assist is spooky.

Any owners with opinions?

And... There's a few DON'T s worth noting.

Don't jump start anyone. The 12 volt battery is lawn tractor sized and just powers computers and lights. There's no starter motor, alternator, or the power to spin a high amp system, like in my Caravan. And obviously you can't use the high voltage battery to jump start anyone or... Kaboom.

Don't pile ice bags or spill lots of water in the back seat. The battery tray isn't waterproof, on top. But is on the bottom. It will fill up and rust expensive stuff.

Don't over fill the oil. No starter that spins the engine at moderate rpm. A big honking Motor/generator that spins the engine to full running speed, then turns on ignition and fuel. So starting ( a LOT, since the engine shuts off at stop lights ) takes a huge gulp of air and sucks in any oil from the breather into the intake.

And weirdest? Don't open the filler door, then wait half an hour, and then try to pump in gas. It will spew it all over. The evaporative emissions system has a timer to reduce fumes. When you push the filler door button, it pops the door, then 2 seconds later opens a valve in the filler neck. Auto closes after 20? minutes? Push the button again before filling, if you're delayed before pumping. ( kids, bathrooms lunch etc. )

Further mini-suv aka crossover research results.

The Fast Lane guys in Colorado have tested a bunch of cars up steep dirt roads. The CVT ones require foot to the floor to try and crawl up hill, and are poor. The Dual Clutch transmission types tend to overheat and shut down the car.

Apparently the dual clutch design I LOVED in my VW on the highway, and not bad in snow ( with serious studded tires ) doesn't do well in clutch slip off road crawling mode. Huh.

Further oddities/features on the Rav4 hybrid.

The new "A25A FKS" ( & FXS, hybrid ) Toyota engines, have both port, AND direct injection. Automatic mode switching causes sudden changes in engine noise as the 3000 psi fuel pump turns on & off. 8 injectors.

https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=9GWKBbEMCC4&t=0s

Also an electric coolant pump, with a computerized valve system to send coolant where it's needed. Summer? Why heat up the heater core in the cabin? It's very clever, but there's software you have to trigger to fill the radiator properly.

Let that sink in, Just like your antifreeze won't! Unless you "tell" the computer to open all the valves and let the flow into the entire system.

And a variable speed oil pump. With the strict requirement for proper 0W-16 synthetic oil. All you guys who follow the Olde Ways of running dino oil for break in, and changing viscosity by the season? Forget that for new cars.

And lots of plastic under the hood. Plastic valve cover, coolant pipes, air plenum for EGR, etc. A bit scary to a Luddite like me.

I may need to adopt the policy of trading cars shortly after free maintenance or warranty expires. Instead of my lifetime policy of driving cars 200,000 plus miles until the body falls off.

If you refuse to increase capacity, load balancing is what you have to do. In the case of an ev, charging at night is a no-brainer. There is very little cause to charge them during the day, and, in CA at least, the humidity is low enough that the overnight temperatures do not necessitate running your AC all night. If your commute is such that you have to charge again to get home, perhaps the current crop of electric cars are not for you, and you need to rethink your decision.

Not to argue, but at night the solar panels are gathering dew, not power, and typical winds slow down at sunset, so at the very time you want to plug in your car, that power isn't there.

If you can't charge up at home, and the trends in micromanaging bureaucrats is leaning that way, what will you do?

It's not there yet, true. But connected thermostats are now being sold with the carrot of cost savings. I suspect wannabe micromanager tyrants don't think they can mandate that, Yet. Ditto home charging stations.

The same kind of people that demand restaurants be closed "For the Duration Of the Emergency While I have Dictatorial Powers Undreamt of By Genghis Kahn" & then have fundraiser parties, or order you out of the parks, are not that far from declaring a Climate Crisis and turning off your power at whim... you know, like last year.

If they could turn off your charger remotely, individually, that is such an attractive power to have over you, for a certain kind of mentally ill monster, it's as Inevitable as Thanos. ; )

Consider the fact that the Governor of New York has directed that counties that didn't majority vote for him not get road work done. ( unofficially, of course ) And other State services cut to Punish them. Do you really want that kind of guy turning your charger off based on your party registration, or Facebook posts?

That ought to sound paranoid. I wish it was.

I'm all onboard with energy conservation like turning down your AC at night, but that's at least in part because I'm a cheap %^&$, and only partly being a responsible Citizen.

I'm curious how long before appeals to collective good become mandates.

Oh, I get it, no sunshine at night. We need fossil fuels. I do not dispute that at all. It is possible, but expensive, to install solar with battery storage at your home. Tesla sells it. I’ve looked at it, and do not find it worth the money. Maybe if I were paying 18 cents per kwh it would be. For me, it’s a 22 year payoff. But the systems are out there, and they work. So you could collect sunshine all day and blow it up your car’s battery hole at night, if you were so inclined. : )

Oh, I'm all for replacing fossil fuels. And if it wasn't for the triad of bad I'd be pro-collection of diffuse energy.

1. Rare elements often mined with child labor in the most polluting way possible.

It's that wonderful intersection between Capitalism and Authoritarian ( Marxist cultists) regimes, where China sells the organs of political prisoners and creates heaping, slowly towering lakes of toxic goo turning to dust and blowing across the Pacific ( and it's people) so the Masters can be richer. African Cobalt. Slave labor.

Just so rich Europeans and Americans can claim holy moral superiority.

2. Unrecycled, broken, toxic Green Power trash. Giant fiberglass propeller blades. Solar panels. Leeching toxic crud. Dead batteries.

Moral superiority! Very important!

3. Buzzword dishonesty for Authoritarian Power. If you don't sacrifice your freedom to rich guys who fly private airliners to exotic resorts to complain about your consumerism, you are responsible for the Ice Age that will kill us all. For the Children.

So we're taking your income to pay the slave labor thugs and buy new, bigger super yachts.

And I'm being nice.

Don't think I'm slamming your choice of cars! There are no zero drawback choices if you need an automobile. Platinum and rare earth stuff is in every IC car sold today, too. Even a bicycle isn't environmentally free of cost.

And our freedom to work past walking distance and outside mass transit routes isn't free of plusses and minuses. If you're not contributing to urban overcrowding ... not straining the overtaxed utilities...

There's no way I could provide a friendly environment for critters and burn as few resources in a typical city apartment. And would cost me more in Boston to park my motorcycle than my mortgage. ( last time I looked when my cousin was going to MIT. )
