So, long story short. This was found in my oil strainer and I have a new motor off the shelf arriving soon. I wondered, is the oil cooler upstream or downstream of the filter element? Should I have concerns about debris in the cooler? I can flush it. The oil looked damn clean when it was drained. The strainer is obviously showing major issues in the motor.

Ferrous or non-ferrous would be helpful. Some of the debris could be small pieces (including dropped and not found) from the build process...but the amount is excessive! Best way to clean oil cooler would be to flush it many times, each time straining through cheesecloth, until you don't see anything. |

Have you pulled the left engine cover off? I've seen lots of debris from bolts coming loose on the stator or the sprag clutch failing. |

that is the left side I believe...see pic near end of thread. http://www.badweatherbikers.com/buell/messages/290 431/880237.html?1614734946 I couldn't find a pic of the oil flow route but I'd imagine that flushing the cooler out before putting it on the new motor would be a good idea... |

IMO 100% worth buying a new cooler. You'll never get all that out of it and they're MUCH cheaper than another engine... |

I’m pretty positive the cooler is after the filter, based on the inlet line location. The left case cover was pulled and the rotor nut was off, the flywheel not secured, no gasket used on the case cover, the thrust washers fused to the upper balancer and engine case. Oddly, the bike was ridden 80 miles home and sounded no louder than my FZ09. I’ll flush the cooler and see what appears. Seems rhe strainer keeps the big parts from the pump, the filter keeps the small parts from the cooler.... as it should. I can’t wait to cut open the filter on this thing. |
