I've got a '99 X1 with a broken boomerang. Apparently, there are 3 different one's I've come across so far. 2 have a vertical length of about 7-1/2" and one that's over 9". I got a short one to match what I have, but the the angle is all wrong. How many different ones are there I need one like the silver one.

All of the S2/S3/M2s have their footpegs in different position from the X1, so those ones won't even come close to working properly. I had assumed the X1 and S1 pegs would fit exactly the same, but when I tried to upgrade the steel shifter on my S1 to the aluminum version from the X1 I found out those two aren't even entirely interchangeable. Even though the footpegs are in the same place, the peg mounts are just tucked ever so slightly further under the frame on an S1, so when I put on the aluminum shifter it was rubbing on my frame and wouldn't work. That would mean the opposite should happen with an S1 peg on an X1 though, it would just stick out maybe 1/8" further, nothing you'd really notice, so if you needed to use one in a pinch just to get your bike back on the road, you could probably also use an S1 shifter, although they're not as nice as the X1 shifter. |

Well, dang... this has me wondering if my "updated shifter" is going to work properly on my S1. |

I have the updated shifter for an X1 on my S1, works perfectly fine(assuming you're talking about the flat shifter that bolts under the middle of the primary). Mine has the split mount that's mean to work with the bellypan, which I don't have, but it still works fine as is. |

You could also take the broken one you have and fabricate a new style linkage such as this.
