In geologic time frames, yes, the Arabic peninsula has rain shadow etc. going on. But N. Africa, right on the Mediterranean? That's not lands that shifted thousands of feet in altitude while the Greeks invented baklava. That's one of the great human caused eco-disasters, PLUS actual climate change. Marginally habitable area because of prevailing winds, then over grazing ( sheep are much harder on plants than cows ) and farming hammered the land. War has destroyed the water works built by previous civilizations, like Carthage. Exactly what the changes are that make the Sahara Forest so green and pleasant are open to argument until a reliable time machine can show us a broader sweep of history. ( and regulations changed to prevent more camera drones from appearing to prophets who changed history reporting visitation from angels ) No one wants another time quake to ruin civilization again. It's bad enough the kids today can't remember the great cultures that disappeared without a trace after the terrible accident at the Gibraltar Dam.  | ||

A few years ago I brought the news about thermal depolymerization (TPD) to the forum. Most folks thought it was snake oil, or pipe dreams. Today, Chevron Phillips Chemical Company announced the commercial scale production of polyethylene from mixed waste plastics. The plastic waste is essentially depolymerized, turned back into a liquid hydrocarbon, then repolymerized as virgin polyethylene. It's the norm. Yup. They're "seasons" of a sort...just, instead of four a year, it's one change every 500 years or so. EVERYTHING on this planet, is cyclical. Tides, twice a day. Sun, once a day. Moon, once a month. Seasons, four a year. Earth around the sun, once a year. ...and, warm period/cool period, every 500 years or so. Not right. Not wrong. Just....IS. Warm periods are 1 or 2 degrees warmer; cool periods are 1 or 2 degrees cooler. Ebb and flow, in and out, up and down...it's life. The reason people don't "get" it, is because we're stupid, and cannot grasp that something (ANYthing) is actually bigger than we are, and that we have no control over it. | ||
