Had an oil leak around the cam cover, and farmed it out cause I didn't feel like dealing with it. Now I have what sounds like a lifter talking. If I drive around 2500 rpm it seems to go away, but if I get on it a little bit it comes back. Any ideas, before I have to tear into it again.... |

"Farmed it out"...that leaves it wide open. HD dealership, dude with a pickup truck, Indie shop...? I have a few ideas and none of them are good. Mostly involving mixing of parts. It's possible, but not likely, that a lifter decided to collapse conveniently while it was apart, but not likely. Were the lifters bled down before reinstallation, if removed? If not, could be a bent push rod. If the wrong rod went in the wrong spot, could be too short. And on and on...Get out the tools and do what you probably should have in the first place. |

Independent shop, known the guy for over 25 years, kept the lifters in oil and marked everything to be put in same spot. What I can't figure out is why it comes and goes. Bike has 116K, maybe one is just wearing out. |

Hi how many times have you replaced lifters in it? Was a tech for a while and use to suggest to people as preventative maintenance to replace them between 40-60k miles depending on how hard you ride the bike. It’s much easier to replace them when you have them out then to repair your bike if a roller needle lets loose. You can get the comp cams ones for like 80-100 bucks for the set. |

They are original with 116k, I guess I got my moneys worth. Can they be changed without removing the cam cover ???? |

I'm sure someone who's actually been in there can give you the specifics, but if you pull the rocker box covers and the rockers, you can pull out the pushrods and the pushrod covers, and pull out the lifters that way. A bit of that needs done before you can pull the cam cover anyway. |

Pulling this down, to include pulling the cam cover is actually really quite easy, if you’ve never “been in that far”, it can seem a little daunting.... I put together a job guide with pictures, and step by step explanations on how to do things and in what order. PM me if you would like a copy. |

I have replaced the cam cover gasket many years ago. That's why I paid someone else to do it this time, and don't want to do it again. If the lifters can come out through the pushrod covers I will try that. Thank-you everyone for the advice.... |
