So I drained my gas tank and removed the petcock. In the center hole there remained a plastic tube that sticks out about 1/4". Was that supposed to come out with the gas tap and just got stuck or for some reason to remain there? | ||

That bit of pipe is the main feed for fuel. Without it, the main petcock position and the reserve position will run out of fuel at the same time. When I bought my 1997 S3 the internal filter, which screws onto the petcock around that tube, clogged. Since then I remove the internal fuel filter and run an external fuel filter, similar to the ones used on the fuel injected motors. | ||

It was the screen that got stuck there. cleaned it up and screwed it back on |
