I need a new shock for my 99 s3 as well as my 96 s1 someday. What companies offer one? I’m having a hard time finding anything. I think Penske makes one but it’s big $$$. I’m planning on calling them tomorrow am and I will post here with my findings. |

Penske will run you about $1300 IIRC. Twin motorcycle shock is great and only about $625 to your door depending on the exchange rate. It also lacks a reservoir so that makes install super easy. Either one can be made in 14 and 16in versions. There’s also an Ohlins out there as well as AST in Europe. Works is defunct to my knowledge. I have a new 14in showa recall kit in the box if you want it, $300 to your door. Twin: https://www.twinmotorcycles.nl/webshop/artikel.asp ?mc=1&aid=4323 Ohlins: https://rover.ebay.com/rover/0/0/0?mpre=https%3A%2 F%2Fwww.ebay.com%2Fulk%2Fitm%2F274119881592 AST: http://www.ast-suspension.co.uk/shop/shockabsorber s/bikes/buell-520-detail/askquestion?tmpl=componen t I feel like the best bang for the buck is the twin shock. It performs well for average street use and is easy to install. RaceTech in California charges about $180 to rebuild a stock showa. So that’s not too bad, even if it needs it every few years. If you ride two up or with a lot of gear on the S3, id definitely have the 14” showa or an aftermarket option. |

Works Performance live again at - http://www.worxshocks.com/html/home.html Just to say - AST have an awful reputation now at UKBEG for being very poorly (over) damped and there have been quite a few snapped shocks at the rod eye area. Not recommended would be my advice. I haven't ever seen an Ohlins shock for tube frame bikes. Do they erxist? (Message edited by classicbuells on February 03, 2020) |

They do make the Penske without the reservoir. I have the one with though. It's good, even though kinda confusing the regular instructions are backwards. But I would sure look into the Twin one, for half the price. The main thing I miss is an easy preload adjustment, like on my XV920R. A remote knob I could twist a notch for when I had a passenger, or two notches if it was a he. |

Works is a great shock, shipped quickly, fit right up to my 16.5" mount. Came with preload set much higher than I need, but that means you can use it for two-up riding. |

i have a pair of twin shocks on my bikes: '99 S3 and '98 S1W. I agree with William that these are the best bang for the buck. If I recall correctly, they even have a lifetime warranty- the kicker is that you have to ship them to Europe every year (or maybe every two), for a rebuild, in order to qualify for lifetime warranty. That's a bit much. For how much you pay to ship it back and forth, you could probably just buy 2 and save the first one for when the 2nd one eventually dies. |

Well, my shock is leaking. Need a new one. 2000 X1 Millennium. How do I know if I have a 14" or 16"? Front bracket type? Measure eye to eye off bike?

Remind me on how to remove, do I need to take the load off the front wheel or can I just put it in a wheel chock or use a pitbull stand. For the rear I need to take the weight off by placing a jack under the engine by the rear of the shock. Should I use straps above the rear frame to stabilize the rear of the bike, can I use a pitbull stand there too? |

I just use a bottle jack and jack up on the bottom of the case as rearward (inside of the shock) as possible. I let it lean over on the kick stand. You can jack it up (or use your Pitbull stand if it will lift it high enough) and put jack stands under the rider pegs, then remove the stand or jack. I like the bottle jack because I can adjust it until I feel the stress leave the rear mount bolt. |

ahhhh, so how do you get to the nut on the front reservoir bracket. Do they purposely put the nut side on the inside? |

So you go from the other side? It looks like that side is blocked. The shock mounting plate is blocking it. |

You do have to get it from the other side, it's kind of tucked back behind where the oil filter/oil pressure gauge is mounted. It's not hard to find. Make sure there's no tension on the front shock, as that bolt is one of the ones holding the mounting bracket on. It's definitely a stupid place to mount the reservoir, but what can you do. |

Sorry, for some reason my photobucket is having an issue, my account is in good standing, not sure why. Anyway...so I have the shock off. Very heavy. Not sure what the shipping cost will be for me. Now I'm thinking of the twin motorcycle one. Is the twin motorcycle one reservoir free? Are any? The reservoir canister is still bolted to my shock. What happens if I unbolt it? It there a check valve to prevent the oil from coming out? not sure how it works. Sorry if I highjacked this thread, LOL |

Please do not remove the reservoir canister. It is an integral part of the workings of the shock. Yes, all the oil will leak out. |

I just received my Twin shock (without reservoir) and am very happy so far. I do not do any performance riding, but just wanted a decent damper on the bike for casual street riding. It is a bit close to the stock muffler, but my Supertrapp clears it by a mile. The reservoir is the actual damper. Like ^^^ said, if you remove it, you will lose oil and have no damping. The Twin shock is a little lighter than the stocker. Not much, but lighter nonetheless. |
