Don’t think I updated this thread along the way as well as I could have. The unnecessary incision got infected, and of course it was MRSA. Three 10 day courses of Bactrim DS (Double Strength) and a visiting nurse every other day for around 5 weeks or so to change the bandage and the gauze packing in the wound channel. Finally seems to have cleared up and closed up. Damn ribs still hurt. Still riding. (Message edited by Panshovevo on September 08, 2019) |

On the good side, I got the White Lightning running by swapping parts with the S3T. Gotta order a fuel pump, and try soaking the injectors again. The previous owner claims to have just replaced the stator and regulator, but according to the Kuryaken voltmeter, it’s not charging yet...more BS to sort out. |

John, you might consider letting your body heal. It's tough sitting around and I totally get wanting to get back in action, but it sounds like you might be delaying your healing and causing complications. However, maybe you subscribe to the other school of thought of getting the damaged parts moving as soon as humanly possible? IDK. Trust me, I know the feeling. I injured my ankle pretty severely and I was sofa-ridden for two weeks recently. (Message edited by fresnobuell on September 12, 2019) |

Turns out the bikes were an excuse for untoward behavior on her part... If I'm reading that right...I've been there. My big get-off in '08 resulted in months of hospital and rehab...2 leg rebuilds...broken ribs...cracked vertebrae...collapsed lung...and she got bored. Somehow she figured she was entitled. Buh-bye. Do your PT and your OT, but don't push too hard. Aches mean a good workout; instant shooting pain means quit NOW. Keep working on range of motion, especially that shoulder. I missed shoulder surgery by a hair back in '08 and I still have a huge amount more range in that arm than I do in the "good" one, just because of the PT exercises! Baby steps. It'll come around, just don't rush it. Push too hard, and your body will fight back. |

Yep, pain is definitely your body communicating to you. The key is knowing how much to push and I agree that a good rule of thumb is aching discomfort is the limit. Shooting pain means you went too far. I am currently dealing with this right now with my ankle. I am at the stage of breaking up the scar tissue (compounded from prior injuries that were not properly treated) and getting the ROM back. Tendons and bones heal slow! The ankle/foot is a fascinatingly complex part of the anatomy. It seems like a miracle that it works at all with all the small bones, muscles, ligaments, tendons, nerves, blood vessels, fascia that have to work in concert and the fact it has to support forces that can occasionally be several times your body weight! |

It’s like this...either I keep busy and keep my mind occupied, or...I can’t even go there in public. |

Keeping busy and keeping your mind occupied, doesn't have to include putting stress and strain on the injured areas. I sit still poorly, too...if all else fails, and your body is arguing with you, and you simply "can't" sit still...go to sleep. That'll rejuvenate the injuries super-fast, your mind won't be wandering or stressed, you won't be tapping your fingers with boredom...and you'll heal. |

I don't like sitting around either. I have lost about 15 pounds in the last month due to my recovery and being sedentary. I know much of it is muscle mass due by just looking at the atrophy of my bum leg. However it's just part of the recovery process and when I ramp up my exercise to my pre-injury levels the muscle will likely come back nearly as fast as I lost it (hopefully). I have been dealing with the boredom by reading up on the anatomy of the calf and foot (amongst other things related to my injury). While I don't know the name of every muscle, ligament & tendon in the region, I can say I know the how it's all supposed to work on a macro level. It's been utterly fascinating and humbling to learn about the human machine and I believe it will certainly help in my ongoing rehab. Still having a lot of pain. I just recently found that there were at least 2 broken ribs in the front of my chest (along with some cracked ones) that were left to heal on their own. They still hurt. The GP who has been writing my pain med prescriptions for around 9 years has cut me off and referred me to the Pain Center at a hospital not far south of here. I have gotten spinal injections from them for about four years, and was happy with their service, but the super-efficient. NP I once dealt with is gone, and I’m getting jerked around left and right. Living on pain meds sucks, and it gets worse all the time. |

[“Yikes . . you are in my neighborhood . . .Bluehairville! Scares the heck outta me to drive . . . riding ,for me, is out of the question. Best wishes for a speedy recovery !”] Never did thank you, Court. I’ll say it now. Thank you. Whereabouts are you? WPB area? I’m based around 35 miles north of there. Can I buy you lunch someday? |

Trying to save the marriage for the kids, for better or worse. I’m waiting for an appointment for some intercostal injections. If I understand correctly, they will be targeting the nerves that were knocked out during the rib plating surgery. The NP told me there are no guarantees...as she put it, you have a ton of metal and an awful lot going on in there. BTW, just in case anyone had any doubts, it was my unregistered and uninsured XB9R that bit me. (race prepped but in need of tuning) Bike’s in fine shape. Well, Hells bells! I got the intercostal injections Friday, noticed somewhat of a difference immediately. I was hoping for progressive improvement. Then yesterday, while in the group therapy thing the wife talked me into attending with her. I was involved in a psychodrama re-enactment of a disturbed individual’s childhood. I had seen him several times before demonstrating a high level of rage, to the point where I was concerned for the safety of other participants if he was pushed too far. This time, I controlled the amount of pressure applied to him, and I cranked it up to see what would happen. The coaches let me do it, as I had expressed my concern about him in the past. They brought a couple of different forms of punch-absorbing bags to place between us, but I was still getting moved around by the force of his blows. He eventually did break down and his rage turned to sobs. It appeared that this session might have been productive. In later vocalizing of inner feelings, there was a new tone coming from him. Where previous instances had been followed by continual anger, this time the tone sounded more like forgiveness. I hope so...because I think something broke in my shoulder again... |

Harlan, going back to your post of September 12th, I do subscribe to the theory of getting parts moving ASAP. It has backfired on me a time or two, but mostly has worked out. I got jumped by a jealous boyfriend back in 1980. I attempted to pivot on one foot and let his momentum carry us to the floor with me on top. I pivoted, my foot didn’t. I lost control of the situation briefly, and had to reach down in my bag of tricks to regain the upper hand. I was riding a kick-start Sportster in those days, and had to ride home, then back to town to the ER after I removed the jump boots I was wearing, and saw the funny angle my foot was hanging at. Long story short, I was told the ankle was too badly broken for the ER doc to handle, and an orthopedic surgeon was called in. After he found that I had no insurance, he wrapped a cast around it, told me to stay off of it for 6 weeks, and sent me home. I missed one day of work, and spent the next six weeks making and delivering concrete roof tile...and riding my Sporty every chance I got. When the last cast came off, I was told to go to physical therapy (aka PT). I didn’t need to. When I had the three level lumbar fusion surgery in early 2016, PT was at my bed 6 hours after the rather extensive front and rear surgery, to get me out of bed and up in a chair. At first, I told them they were freaking nuts, but they convinced me that it would be even harder if I waited until the next day. I did it. When they first had me walk the ward, I passed a room from which emanated a mournful moan of pain. I asked what was up with that, and was told it was a patient who had been the recipient of a major scoliosis correction surgery, and had continually refused to get out of bed for PT. The family had eventually decided to sedate him to whatever level it took to make him comfortable, after being advised as to the probable outcome and signing the necessary releases. He left the following day under a sheet... I redoubled my efforts after that, and set a goal of doing double what they asked me to every day. I left the hospital ahead of schedule. Another example was the time I strained an Achilles’ tendon in Basic Training. I went on sick call one day because of it, and was told by a medic to ice it regularly and stay off of it for three weeks. Nope, wasn’t going to happen...that would have meant being ‘recycled’ to a later training cycle, and it had been made clear to us that short of a loss of a limb or something else dramatically visible, we would be treated like whale sh#t, the lowest of the low. I pushed on...10 miles a day of running to the rifle range with gear and a rifle, and having’GI parties’ every night until 1:00 AM or so because our platoon didn’t come in first in the PT (Physical Training) qualifications. Still scored expert in the marksmanship qualification, and after about four weeks, I realized it didn’t hurt any longer. (Message edited by Panshovevo on November 21, 2019) |

Marriage is done. I’ve been told to leave the house and my kids, and get a divorce attorney. 29 years down the tubes, and I’m a fat half crippled old man. I should have listened to someone wiser than I who told me years ago to get out of that relationship while I still had a reasonable chance of starting another one. |

Sorry for your family problems Pans. Marriage can be tough. It's worth putting all in to keep it though. Don't give up. |

Thanks Blake. Unfortunately, it’s too late, barring anything short of a miracle. The task of the moment is to keep her from gaining sole custody of my adopted grandkids. She apparently just assumed that’s the way it should be. (Message edited by panshovevo on May 21, 2020) |

It is time to put one of the 1125s back on the road. I quit riding the hot rods after the crash last year, to try to make the wife and eldest daughter happier, but it didn’t make any difference in the long run anyway. She admitted that she had decided she was done after that crash. The subsequent 11 months have been a waste of time. (Message edited by Panshovevo on May 21, 2020) |
