I decided to upgrade the emitter on my TLR-2 and ordered a G2X to go on my 16" AR. My last underpowered light (a 100 lumen Viridian CTL) will either be sold off or will go on my AR-22.

Rat,
Maybe a Taurus Judge 45/410 revolver?

There are some really creative .410 rounds out there these days. Slugs, slugs and pellets, disks and pellets, buckshot, BB shot and others.

I like Tritium sights. Those look bright. I have used the factory Sig Sauer tritium on the P-227 and the OEM ones that come on the SW1911SC. Smith and Wesson's are not very bright. Those look to do the deed. I like three dots for low light sighting. I will say that those are ugly.

On a pistol in defensive shooting the front sight is everything. Tritium with a day-glo color on the front is an instinctive way to draw/aim/shoot. Trijicon makes good sighting systems. Probably put 10K through my 1911 in all sorts of target and defensive exercises (thanks to the late Chuck Taylor's advanced defensive handgun courses). The Trijicon have a good instinctive aim. Don't know if there's a way for you to try a few different sights in a dim room or bright light. You don't even need to operate the bang switch to see what works.

The TFX's are bulky and the fiber optic requires a light source directly above.

I'd go AmeriGlo or Trijicon.

I'm not too picky on front sights, but I like my rear blacked out.

The TFX is tritium-filled, it will glow on its own. Yes, fiber optics on their own do require a light source they can "focus" and make the optic glow, but tritium is a radioactive substance that simply glows on its own, no recharging needed. TFX has a tritium vial located at the front end of the fiber-optic, to light the fiber anytime.

I'm also looking at the TFX line for my EDC. They are larger, which is good for old eyes, but they are also rounded, which is good for anti-snag draws, and shaped to aid if one hand slide-racks are required.

They're on my list for as soon as this house sells...I love my laser (Viridian Reactor5 ECR instant-on green laser), but always believe in redundancies, and want good irons on the pistol in case I have a battery issue on the laser.

The Tritium does nothing to enhance the light pipes during the day.

Light pipes without light are useless.

softly glowing dots are useless in daylight too, so both together is not bad. Bulky, that's true.

I've got light pipes on my shotgun sights, Turkey version, regular notch type. Work ok, but I'd prefer the type Slaughter posted above for a pistol.

The tritium makes the pipes glow in total darkness - no need to harvest any ambient light.

The Tritium glows in darkness regardless unless they're poor quality vials or really old.

I've got light pipes on a couple guns and they're kind of a hassle and don't enhance shooting performance for me at all.

I think we both understand, but we're missing each others' point here.

Yes, the fiber optic pipes harvest light in low-light situations. The stock front sight on my XDs is a fiber optic, and I'm not a fan.

The TFX has tritium in it as a redundancy. They put the vials at the front ends of the pipes, so even without ambient lighting the pipes will glow. It's a redundancy, that's all.

My problem is that the fiber optics don't harvest light. They need a direct light source to do any good, natural or otherwise...and they also have a habit of ejecting themselves on high round count guns...especially those that recoil hard...though it's an easy enough fix.

Mine collects decently in low-light. Has to be enough light to make out shapes, though. My XDs EDC came with spare rods, too, that can be cut and inserted. It shipped with red, but came with spare red and green.

I forget what they say to do on install, but there's something in the cut/melt/insert process that is supposed to help secure them in the housing...

My irons are a backup anyway though, since I have an auto-on laser attached to the rail/trigger guard.

Big thing for me is lint, even with the kydex IWB. Granted, I've curtailed my range time lately due to ammo restrictions (don't want to burn through all of it until replacement is more readily available), but it seems like I clean because of lint, about ten times more often than I clean because of firing! I don't carry it or maintain it "wet" by any stretch, but it still gets packed in all the nooks and crannies...

Lint is certainly an enemy for any EDC. Lube plus lint is always a nasty proposition. I've found the wheelguns much more tolerant of that sort of thing.

The Leupold Prismatic on my home AR has enough gunk dislodged internally that it looks like it has multiple reticles. It's time to warranty it. I'm tempted to go Eotech, but ain't got that kinda dough.

I will stick with ghost rings on my AR. Only scope I ever used on an m-16 was the night scope. A ghost ring is fast when used right.

Nearsighted my whole life, so I'll take a scope or red dot on a rifle. I'm waiting for the video game holographic sight that displays the aim point in space. : ) Want that for pistols, too.

My Winchester Super-X 2 Wild Turkey Foundation special has light pipe enhanced square notch rifle sights, and work great with slugs. I long favored notch sights, but finally learned to like aperture sights.

Opinions on big white dot front sights for stubby little pistols?

That DXT big-dot looks pretty slick...might have to try and find them in person, to judge overall size/snag-resistance.

I'm more concerned with front sight, than rear.

As for one-hand racking...hopefully I'll have the presence of mind to count shots like I always do, and do a tactical reload while there's still one in the pipe. Under pressure there's no guarantees, but...

Actually, my ultimate hope is that I never, ever, have to find out one way or the other.

I got a chance to shoot a Shield "EZ" 9mm. While it was easy to rack, the recoil seemed excessive for a 9mm of that size. I swear the regular Shield is softer shooting. Felt undersprung, naturally. Shot accurately enough, when I did my part. It probably doesn't help that I spent a day digging up dirt. I expected better.

A friendly reminder, as violent prisoners are being released in droves, for covid or for prison reform, to carry whenever and wherever possible.

Be mindful that carrying a concealed arm is but one way to provide for your own defense. I blame my military and White House experience but I never leave home without a Plan B and Plan C.

I’d never bet my life solely on deploying a handgun.

In can be a source of protection and an equally effective source of over confidence.

You may have 50,000 range rounds under your belt but you’ve not fired a single round under the circumstances that would exist in that split second you need it.

That’s a big bet.

Very true. I’ll bet very few people have fired a round in anger. Still, defense is why we carry. I’m not going to stop simply because I’ve never been forced to shoot someone.
