Need some straight forward answers, I misplaced my owners manual and need to know if the engine oil is shared by the transmission or if it is seperate. I plan on changing one or both, the local shop made it seem as though they were seperate. If so what fluid viscosity would you recommend for each. Does the trans have a filter on this bike. |

separate. Just use the HD stuff (HD 50 in the motor, Sport Trans in the tranny) or start a war by asking what's the best. I run Mobile1 V-Twin and SportTrans. Trans does not have a filter. edited by josh_ on June 03, 2004 |

You have a 2003 XB9R according to your profile. The engine oil is separate from the tranny/primary oil. If you use the new H-D approved synthetic you can use the same lubricant for both, but verify it with someone who will guarantee it first. There is a filter for the engine oil, there is not a filter for the tranny/primary oil/fluid. |

I just put the Motul synthetic 20-50 in my 9S yesterday. Made a huge difference. |

This is the 21st Century. You should not be using anything but FULL SYNTHETIC oils in the XB's. Don't use HD SportTrans. Any FULL synthetic oil of the proper weight/viscosity will provide much better lubrication and have superior anti-wear properties. I use Mobil 1 20W-50 (V-Twin oil) and Mobil 1 75W-90 (gear oil) in engine and primary/trans, respectively. Mike. |

Daveinm said he uses Motul, not Mobil 1. In my case, the shifting became much smoother and quieter when I replaced the SportTrans with Mobil 1 gear oil. Also, the Mobil 1 made it easier to find neutral (gets it on the first try most times). Compared to the HD dino oil that came with the bike, Mobil 1 V-Twin oil makes the engine run smoother, quieter, and cooler(the fan runs less frequently). Oil is cheap, engine and trans aren't. Just get synthetic and if you don't see any improvement, go back to what you are using now. No need to take my (or anyone's) word for it. Mike. |
