Imagine humanity has to leave the Planet Earth and find another place due to Planet Earth condition is becoming inappropriate for people. But condition in not going to be very bad for some primitive creatures so those can survive. Would you kill all creatures on the Planet Earth (sterilize Planet Earth using some kind of process like nuke, viruses or poison) to prevent possible situation when the rest of the life on the Planet Earth will have evolved to living form more advanced than humanity and this living form will go after humanity to destroy it or slave it? Let's see if I understand. Humans had to leave Earth because of an unspecified extinction level event that kills all higher life forms? Interesting premise, assumes we could evacuate a seed population, or already have colonies elsewhere. ( L5 O'Neill cylinders, Mars domes, generation interstellar ships ) Would I sterilize the planet to prevent being over run by evolved intelligent Horseshoe crabs? ( or octopi ) No, that takes a level of paranoid prediction and response beyond generations and into Epochs. David Weber's "Dahak" series ( 4 books ) has an alien enemy that periodically sweeps the galaxy, killing all possible competing life, not just intelligent life, but also, for example, the dinosaurs. There's a plausible explanation for the long term obsessive behaviour. And the response of the rare survivors of these periodic great killings is obsession with being prepared for the return of the genocidal aliens. One plot point is that the surviving people tend to quit believing that there is a real threat after thousands of years. Good read, highly recommended. Again, no, I wouldn't. I'd think I'd want to recolonize the Earth after whatever disaster the species is fleeing from fades away. | ||

Re: Viking finds article. What this shows is that during the warm period a thousand years ago, life was better, trade was better, agriculture was better, and for my ancestors ( on the one side, anyway ) the great Age of Exploration and commerce opened trade from the Ural mountains to North America. We're still in a cold, suboptimal climate compared to the Good, Warm times. There's many reasons to WANT a warmer climate. Unless you live in equatorial regions. And even then, don't the models show more warming in the temperate regions? | ||
